My wife drives a Volvo S60. It's a very safe car and has reasonable performance (get the turbo). Sure it doesn't have the handling characteristics of a BMW, but it's a lot more comfortable than my 330i with sport package.
The other nice feature is that they have very good deals on these cars which make them quite affordable for a somewhat upscale car.
