Sky roof crack

I’ve had my M50 since October and just noticed a crack about 10 inches long in the front left corner of the sky roof. There’s no sign of a point of impact to indicate anything hit it. It curves the corner so it’s not going to run any further.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Stress or pressure? Warranty?

Angry Sky roof crack

I posted on 3/8 about an acquaintance who had a total failure of the sky roof. It just disintegrated and fell into the drivers compartment. No injuries, luckily. At Albany dealer for replacement. Maybe some kind of defect in some glass panels.

Is the roof bonded to the body like the windscreen ?

I suspect if so, the roof glass isn’t laminated and is weaker than a laminated windscreen. Car body flex may be flexing the bonded glass roof causing stress fractures leading to complete failure.

Not very good pictures. I did take it to the dealer this morning. They couldn’t find any reason for the crack but took pictures and said they would submit to their BMW rep to see what they have to say. We’ll see.

I’ve heard of stress crack by other brand as well. Suspect it has do with the tremendous size & the flex of the vehicle as it’s driven

Curious, can the new X3 be ordered without the sun roof or does it come as standard or within a package?

It is an extra you need to order. Usually it comes without it.

I have not opted for this as I was scared of the exact problem which happened here.

It's part of a pack, and if you choose not to get the pack you will be missing out on other things, like HUD, only comes with the premium package

I do see it under both the CONVENIENCE & PREMIUM Packages. I would not want to give up HUD which is included in the PREMIUM package. I was wondering if BMW would build an X3 with all the features of the PREMIUM & discount it a bit for NOT GETTING THE Sky Roof.
I have not ask BMW yet.
BTW in mid 2023 BMW had a parts shortage for the 2023 x1 & offered $1000 credit or so if production occurred without the sun roof.

Oh, that sucks. In Germany the glass roof is a separate option and not bound to any package.

I would pay extra to get the premium pack with moonroof delete

Since there's no sunroof anymore, I actually would've paid extra to delete the pano and have a solid roof too. I never have the shade open now that there's no sunroof (I actually used it all the time in my G01)

Oh man, so sorry this happened, BMW should take care of this for you, but I wonder how long the repair will take for you considering parts availability.

I’d have to give up the HUD, and I love the HUD in my G87. I don’t do glass roofs. I don’t even do sunroofs.
