1995 E36 M3 vs 1996-1999 E36 M3
What is the difference other than engine size, because for the US market output was basically the same I was just wondering what if any real difference was. Because here is a (local for me) supercharged 1995 M3 with lots of other decent mods and wanted to know what you guys think. I am also looking into a B5 S4 2000-20002, or an early e46 M3 with high miles.

if the seller doesnt know the difference, i would stay away from that car. aftermarket forced induction requires so much maintanence. it's likely that car has been beat on a fair amount.

I would agree, I might take a look though, the previous owner was an enthusiast though and just traded it in and now the person is trying to sell it.

OBDI - might have to get sniffed for emissions
OBDII - if no CEL's and all the ecu's tests are good, you pass emissions. I have a 99, no cat, turbo, no problems. OBDI is easier to tune though.

There are quite a few differences, but they are subtle. The biggest difference asside from the motor is obd1 vs obd2. Given the choice I prefer obd1 because it is simpler, especially regarding emissions.
AA used to only sell turbo kits, so most likely the posting is correct and it is in fact a turbo kit on the car you are looking at. There were several iterations of the kit, but I would stay away unless the bottom end was rebuilt with lower compression pistons and stronger rods. European Car magazine had a long build series on the e36 M3 that included AAs turbo kits a few years ago. It is probably still on their web site under project cars. I'd read through that to see what was involved in making the car reliable.

His pictures are better.
FWIW you forgot to mention that the 95's steering rack is slightly different. The control arm bushings are different. The adhesives they used are different (they smell different too). Different engine size 3.0 vs. 3.2. Different half-shafts and a few other minor differences. Mine is a '95 Just make sure you have enough money to maintain these cars--- they are quite expensive but its a labor of love. I've had it for 6 months and already overhauled the cooling system, replaced motor mounts, transmission mounts, fan clutch, and various other things. Slowly getting it ready to be a track/autocross warrior. |

I've had both.
Another small difference is stock wheels on the 95 are square setup vs 96+ is staggered. My 95 e36m3 My 99 e36m3 Stock for stock, the 95 e36m3 handles a bit better, but I personally liked the 99 m3, because it has a bit more low end torque & with some suspension tweeks, it'll have the best of both worlds.
