I started on a 600 SS...but I had 10+ years of racing dirt bikes under my belt, before I started riding street bikes. Took about two months before I wanted more power.

Having rode 100's of thousands of miles on motorcycles over the years (owned them since the early 70's and used many of them as my DD) it's not so much the size of the first bike as the mental state of the person riding it. Some just need to start on something smaller then a 600. Some are OK. Just know, that you probably will drop it a few times, especially at first. Now, do you want to drop a more expensive 600 cc or a cheap 250cc Ninja as you are coming up to speed? If you have the need to speed - get the a 250cc first. Much better chance to outlive the need for speed while you learn how to ride.

Word of caution.. you just need to continually work on increasing your skills on a bike; Safely courses, track events, practice in parking lots for all manners of handling. And just wear all of the gear. All of it. The road is a very unforgiving place to land.

I would get just about anything before a Ninja 250...

I completely agree with this. If you want to learn how to ride well and to the limits faster, start on a smaller bike. It WILL make you a better rider in less time than a large displacement bike. Razzy, as much as he is slammed for his opinion, is giving you very good advice.

A 650R is not a difficult bike to sell. It may not be as easy to sell as a 250R but it is not that difficult and you would not outgrow it as quickly.

Look up some local classifieds. I recommend the 250 route the most though. I mentioned them previously

Thank mate. Everytime someone wants to start on a SS it worries me. I am harsh in my words simply because this is a seerious matter. It sickens me that some people here are giving second rate advice based solely on their personal experiences. Motorcycles are a serious sport and a hobby. The can seriously injure a rider or worse.

When i provide my feedback and opinion it is backed by facts, reasoning AND personal experience. Not solely the latter.

A Suzuki GS500 is a great starter bike if you can find one for sale. I know they discontinued making them but you might find a very nice used example.

Just my $.02, get what you want, if you think you are responsible enough to keep yourself in check, that is on you. Some will disagree...actually many will disagree, but just my opinions. And yes, I have been around quite a few bike related places and owned let's just say more than a couple of bikes.

Get a 1300..... can't make a specific decreasing radius turn @ 40mph? You crash....
get a 1000..... can't make a specific decreasing radius turn @ 40mph? You crash....
Get a 600 ..... can't make a specific decreasing radius turn @ 40mph? You crash....
and finally:
Get a 250 ..... can't make a specific decreasing radius turn @ 40mph? You still crash....

You won't see hardly anyone crash in a straight line from power, just from knuckle heads turning in front of them or in panic stop situations, nothing to do with a bigger displacement bike.

The main determining factor is YOU and your personality. I have helped from a short female to ride on a Busa as their first bike all the way down to someone with a 250 at a track. It has nothing to do with the bike, all on the rider, his/her personality to deal with ego and pressure from others......and most importantly.... LUCK.

Just something else to add, no matter what bike you get, please surround yourself with:

1 - people that actually know how to ride, not glamour riders/hollywood riders
2 - out of those that know how to ride, get close with the ones that actually give a sh*t about your well-being

If you don't know bikes all that well (which it seems you dont) it's hard to differentiate those people. And lastly, if you have any other questions, post up and we will all give our opinions and advice. Apologies for the long post up above.

I would not start on a 600 unless you want to kill yourself. I sold my blue ZX-6R for a blue '12 S1000RR. I spent 4 years on a 250 before I bought my 600. Can't wait till spring. The ZX-6R has lead it's class for the past 3 years. Powerful engine, A flawless chassis, and it's actually very comfortable. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about. I would start on a 500 or a 650 or the like. The power band on a SuperSport requires you to rev and you are in no position to be riding like that right now. Also, don't ride a 250, you're going to kill yourself with a bike that has no guts.

Yes, the ZX-6R is currently the class leader in the SS segment. Although it looks great I didn't get it for the looks
