You're fucked basically. Waiting till the last moment to by plane tickets is never a good idea. Do you have any american express point or sky miles with anyone? That could help to lower the cost.

When a flight route is in the market and the plane seats are empty...tickets are not the most expensive nor the cheapest...it's midrange and lower unless it's a new route by the airline.

Tickets are generally cheapest 3-8 months before departure and is sold on ratio of how many seats are filled yet.

If the seats are filling up fast, the airline will notice it and raise the price to control the demand.

2-3 days before departure are the most expensive unless it's less than 3/4ths full then it will sell cheap.

The only way to find out how many seats are sold on the plane...you need to work for the airline or know someone who works for them or has flight benefits through them (only for airline employees). When looking up flights for non-rev, it will show you the load on the plane.

And most international flights are not cheap...that's where the airlines make most of the money.
