OP: you have to occupy the cat. I build mine pillow forts sometimes and he disappears for hours, they really like small spaces where they can hide and look out at the world simultaneously. Try leaving a dresser drawer open enough for your cat to crawl into and get out of.

Clearly my sister-in-law's cat is the exception then, he is dumb as a post and does not respond to getting punished. When he wants any human interaction (which is rare to begin with) he'll jump up and get into your lap looking to be petted. He'll sit there purring until without warning or anything, he'll whip around and bite your hand (fairly hard - he's drawn blood a couple of times from what I remember). I've then smacked him hard and thrown him (also fairly hard, just not so hard that I think he'll break a leg when he lands). Within 2 minutes, the stupid thing is back attempting to get into your lap (which, if you do let him, he'll repeat the bite whenever he feels you have let down your guard).

Dislike that cat.

Haven't met any other cat that I dislike that much, but then, I've also never met a cat I liked and thought "Hey, this animal is actually worth something".

Dogs on the other hand are amazing and actually affectionate.

Thats because punishment is largely ineffective at changing behaviors. Unless you are catching them every single time, the times they get away with it actually reward them and they are on a schedule of intermittent reinforcement, not punishment. As for cats and dogs, IMO dogs are there to love you, cats are there to be loved by you.

Learning theory is neat. I have four research rats which will reliably steal a marble from each other and put it through a hoop.

LOL. my cousin is convinced cats are somehow related to the devil because of that "baby crying" noise they can make. especially when they fight. gotta admit it is kinda creepy.

so how do i stop my cat from jumping on my desk when im trying to get work done or getting ready for the day? she jumps on it repeatedly even after i grab her and toss her aside. she needs to grow up already and be like the those old slow cats that dont do anything at all already.

Studies have shown that only cats that live with humans make noises like that. They adapt their cries for maximal effect. For humans, a human baby cry sound gets the most attention. Wild cats have different sounding cries.

You can either live with it if she's not really doing any harm or get a "scat mat" that feels bad on their paws. Put it on the surface you don't want them on, and every time she jumps on, she'll jump right off. Here's an example:

haha wow, that even startled me. ill look into that i could really use that on my counters too. and as for the crying thing, makes sense. but its still creeepy.
