Traffic rule question - involves two one way streets
Hi Everyone,
Wanting to get other peoples input on what they believe is correct. You are on a one way 4 lane road going east. The far left two lanes are turn lanes to turn onto a one way 4 lane street. You are in the far left of the two turning lanes. There's traffic waiting in both turning lanes. Which lane(s) of the one way 4 lane street would you consider it ok for me turn onto? 1,2,3 or 4? What lanes would you consider it ok for the person in the 2nd turn lane to the right of me to turn onto? 1,2,3 or 4? Did I explain that well enough? |

Assuming lane #1 is the far left, then the only lane that you can turn into is lane #1. The 2nd turn lane to the right of you can turn into either lane #2, 3, or 4 of their choice, but in theory, he/she can only turn into lane #2.

Yeah, based on the law here I think for two one way streets that might be the case.
http://www.theindianalawyer.com/judg.../article/27392 Evidently the law is a bit lax on a 4 lane two way traffic turn though. |

I made a turn into the second lane from the left lane and the guy next to me did not appreciate it much. I typically am in the 2nd turning lane and go to the 3rd lane. Oh well. I swear during rush hour if I was in the 2nd turn lane and went to the 2nd lane I'd get smoked by the first lane trying to get to the 2nd lane. Oh well.

We have dotted lines painted on the road for this, as we actually have a similar situation here on a road I am on all the time. 4-lane road, lanes 1 & 2 are turning left onto a 4-lane road, lanes 3 & 4 continue straight. However, contrary to what @Xmetal said, here, because of the dotted lines that guide you thru the turn, turn lane 1 cars can enter into lanes 1 or 2 of the new road, and turn lane 2 can enter lanes 3 or 4.
They have dotted lines on many of the roads here to help drivers through turns. Mostly because I live in Ohio and the drivers here are stupid as hell (I'm from MI ). |
