R.I.P. SkyMall
SkyMall filed for bankruptcy last week, thus taking away my favorite casual bathroom reading material.
Here's a list of some of their stranger offerings.

From the WSJ article
The SkyMall retailing business had revenue of about $33.7 million in 2013, but only $15.8 million for the nine months ended Sept. 28, 2014.

Purely a time killer when sitting on a plane... Never ordered from them directly as all items were available from the individual vendors. Now that I can use my phone or iPad during the flight, no need to even pick up SkyMall, simply shop online.

I always wondered how they stayed profitable, surely they aren't selling that much stuff and since they got WiFi on planes everyone just shops on Amazon. I used to look at them a lot as a kid though.

They are just another casualty of amazon, since many of the skymall items could be found on Amazon for less money. Also having a smart phone on the plane to do a price check did not help them.
Front Gate will probably be next. |

I was wondering just now if anyone has stats on smartphone use in relation to this news? I'll bet if you dug around a bit you'd find SkyMall's parent company has been financially supportive of the "phones crash planes" camp.

I'll be honest, and the flights where I didn't have a SkyMall in the front pouch, I was pretty upset. They changed it with SkyTimes or something, not even any good looking chicks to look at to keep you occupied.

Over 2 million flight miles between AA & DL, but I never bought so much as 1 item from them. I'll miss thumbing through the catalogs though.

Speaking of which, I didn't want to dump $10 on wifi for our flight to Boston recently, so I surfed to something available on American's internal wifi called Gilt. Just a bunch of clothing catalogs really. I had to give them an email to view it, so I gave them my junk Gmail account. Holy shit, they spam it several times a day. Just a friendly warning if you should ever run across that site on American's intranet.

And like a Phoenix from the ashes... or at least an attempt.
Is SkyMall the comeback kid of the retailer industry? You bet your 100-watt hand-held garment steamer with travel pouch and accessories ($29.99) it is.

I think I looked through those catalogs once or twice in all my years travelling. I have never bought anything. I once thought about buying those goggles that allow you to watch movies as if they were shown on a big screen but didn't.
