My commute didn't really have much highway driving. Out of the 80 miles (one way) about 20 of it was actually easy open free cruising. The car has spent tens of thousands of miles sitting in dense/stop and go traffic in Northern Virgina on a daily basis. A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I have an Z4m with 45k miles but while shopping for it I saw a blue Z4MR with 220k miles out in California. One of the higher mileage s54's I've seen

Not going to try and compete in this thread but just tripped 100k on October 12th. I self warranty so did the 100k service in three intervals this summer. I'll do the cooling refresh in January.

Exactly. Fuel is injected into the intake runner instead of directly into the combustion chamber. Less efficient, but there's much less to go wrong!

Did you have any warm up mercy? Babying my n52 until the oil temp gauge creeps may be in vain

My old E30 Owner's manual provided BMW's engine warm up protocol. The E30 manual states that the cold engine should not be revved past 3,000 RPM until the temp gauge needle moves out of the (blue) cold range. So, I follow that practice with the E90 (blindly sort of). I keep the revs below 3,000 for a few miles, but still keep off WOT until the heater comes up and blows warm air. Modern engines are designed to reach temperature faster to reduce exhaust emissions, so I decided just a few miles was adequate to consider the engine is warm enough. I live in a rural area, so it's easy to determine engine operational state by distance (location) markers. I wish BMW would have provided a temp gauge in the lower-level trims, or used the dial indicator on the tach that shows redline vs. coolant temperature.

I usually wait until the oil is at temp vs the coolant gauge. The old advice was that it takes about 15 to 20 minutes of highway driving to get the oil at temp. I found recent challenge to this fact after watching some data logging in my F22. Oil warmed up much quicker than expected.

When the engine is cold, the oil cooler works as an oil warmer, to get the oil up to a reasonable operating temp faster than it would otherwise.

Going by memory, I think the manual says not to idle excessively, just warm it for a min thereabouts and then drive not too crazily until it goes to the reg temp (one or 2 ticks below mid-pt). In practice, when I start the engine the revs shoots up to ~1.2K and I wait for it to rest at 900 before moving.

If it's not ready to drive within a couple of seconds of starting, there's something seriously wrong! That said, I wince when people (mainly delivery drivers) start and rev and pull away immediately - even if the engine is hot. Auto start/stop does leave me conflicted.

Also anyone who revs an engine on cold start needs an alarm clock that wakes them up by slapping them in the face.
