Trading in a car

Has anyone traded in a car that's in someone elses name? My father would like to sell his Mini Cooper S, and I was thinking I might be able to take advantage of a tax credit (7% in my area) from a new car purchase. Is that possible?

The Mini is registered in another state...if that matters.

Thanks,
Eric

I don't know how it is in Hotlanta, but here in NC you can trade in a car that is in someone elses name, so long as they are there to sign their car over to the dealership... I used to be a car salesman. What is it exactly that you are doing?
