Good question...
Supposedly. There were a few articles posted on blogs, including a few featured threads on this site. The new Z4 is too big. The 1/3-Series seat four people, instead of being traditional two-seaters. The Z2 was going to be a less expensive, sportier, lighter Z4.

In typical BMW fashion, it would be appreciably smaller and about the same weight.

It is thought it will pick up where the old Z4 left off, and shall be built on the 2nd Gen 1 series platform. Might be something we will see as soon as 2012-13.
I bet there is a big market for a less expensive 2 seat roadster. |

Why would someone still buy the z4 then, if a lighter cheaper z2 comes out? To me these cars are supposed to be simple 2-seat roadsters.. I'm all for choice, but I don't think i would like if BMW watered down in terms of 2-series, 4-series, z2 etc. It'd be too weird. I stand to be corrected though.
To me, let Audi have the TT/R4, and Merc have SLK/SL.. Our z4 should be able to compete with all of them! (Hopefully they make a Z4M again with S65.. I'd buy it) |

Why?
Not everybody wants to drop 50-70k on the larger Z4... Some want a simple 2 seater with a folding top, that has a fun high revving motor... and there are many new motors coming our way in the next several years. -- New Turbo 4's are coming too, so this opens up a whole new baby brother for the current Z4! I meant that the other way around though: Why would someone buy a Z4 if a Z2 is even more fun, for less money & they both only seat 2 so are both roadsters with limited (similar) practicality. (i am assuming both are handsome-looking.) It just seems like BMW would compete 'against' itself.. Just like I would probably never buy an SL550/600, since I could just get the AMG variant of the SLK. |

It does seem like there's a little room to work with here, especially with BMW getting semi-serious about returning four bangers to the our shores and the push upmarket of the new Z4.
I had a Miata that I still hold is more fun and a better car than the Z3 or Z4, especially if you consider price and the new Miata is rumored to be getting smaller and lighter, leaving room back where the Z3 was size wise. If BMW could keep the weight down (not use the 1er platform) this would be an interesting project. If it's just a 1er with less practicality, but with the same heavy chassis and a straight six, I don't see the point. |

The differences between Z4 and Z2 are that the Z4 has I6 and Z2 only I4 and no I6. The Z4 has a Hardtop but the Z2 a Softtop and a Coupé. Z4 is vs. SLK and Boxter and Z2 is vs. MX5.
