seems like 2012 is real after all. I'm building my undeground hideout tomorrow and stock food/supplies. lol

i was reading about asteroid and if one about 10km hit us, we are pretty much wiped out. this makes me think. OUr technology is not up to the level where we can detect everything. what if we miss it? life on earth will end just like the dinosaur.

they are saying nothing will happen for another few million years, but what if there is an asteroid lurking somewhere undectec? It can hit us anytime.

true, a specific eq is difficult to predict. however, given the knowledge of prior seismic events combined w/ our understanding of a given fault/area, it can be possible to calculate an approx. probability of an eq (so you might see the USGS say things like the sf bay area is 'overdue' for another big one based upon that kind of analysis).

richter scale is logarithmic, so 8.8 is almost 1000x more intense than the one that struck haiti. its most likely due to their strict building codes and preparedness that more people didn't die.
