Can't say I have ever had a rum that I wanted to sip on, just mixing spiced rums.
I can't even find yellow spot around me, all I ever see is green spot.

I've skipped the green but can't find any yellow. Guess I'll just have to make due with what I have.

For those liquor aficionados, I'm sure you've heard of Pappy Van Winkle: the $3,000 per bottle bourbon, that is supposedly second to none. You may not have heard of its little known cousin, WL Weller.
Essentially Pappy has very strict standards for each bottle, and any liquor that doesn't quite cut it to be labeled as PVW, gets bottled and sold as WL Weller. To the untrained taste, it's very hard to find a difference between the two as they are virtually the same. The WL Weller is $40 a bottle, if you can find it before it gets sold out at your local liquor store. It is my go to drink, and undoubtedly the best bourbon for its price. And here's my bar. |

Local store had no Weller, so I ended up with another Proper Twelve. As I was paying I noticed a bottle of Eagle Rare up on the shelf behind the counter. Not sure why it was there as it's not that pricey a bottle.
Binny's (Superstore in Champaign) had regular Jameson's for $19.99 a fifth this past Saturday. But being the day before the Super Bowl, the place was mobbed. I don't do lines well, even for a good deal. Same bottle is $29.99 at the local store.

I tried fat-washing some Four Roses Yellow Label with brown butter. I need to work on it some more, as it only had a faint note of the butter.

It seems pretty location based, it is pretty easy and common to find around me. Same with Buffalo Trace.

I can't ever find some that I do want like Weller, Mightnight Summer Dram, Yellow dot, etc. anywhere around me (I've looked a lot of places) so it's a give and take. I would take some of those nicer ones in place of the eagle rare, even though it is a good budget sipper.

Thanks to the Pappy hype, Weller is a tough get everywhere, it seems.
Midwinter Night's Dram is good, really good. I've never seen it "in the wild", I did buy a bottle off the secondary market. Not sorry I did, but probably not something I'd do all the time, either at $100-125/bottle. My old liquor store in SC had Yellow Dot pretty regularly. Seems that the Irish stuff flies a bit under the radar in the south. |

Tried the Plantation XO 20 year last night. That's a damn fine rum, super smooth and very nice taste. Will definitely have to make sure to keep a bottle on hand.
