Good news over here, the rain is stopping and should be dry for Christmas Eve at +13C.

I hope the roads are cleaned up by Monday. 1. I can wash my car at work and 2. it'll be a bit less stressful to drive to work.

After an '08 ice storm in New Hampshire, we felt fortunate to have a full-house backup generator that got us through 12 days without power. A crew from Pennsylvania finally got us back on-line on Christmas Eve. In terms of convenience, that generator was one of the better home improvement buys I've ever made.

Heavy snow is the worst, especially if you've got a lot of it to move by hand. New England Nor'easters dumped wet, heavy stuff on us that seemed more like fresh cement than anything resembling snow. Clearing that was always a real workout.

We got rain yesterday that turned to ice around midnight. Then it snowed on top of that. I had no choice and had to go out twice in it today. It was not a good time to be on the road. There weren't many cars out, but half the drivers didn't seem to know how to manage the icy and slippery conditions very well - especially on hills, which are hard to avoid around here. The interstate was especially tricky with cars and pickups sliding around a fair amount.

Well apparently heavy winds at the NC house overnight. Camaras picked up a closed umbrella being opened and blown away and even blew off the cover on my truck which is not only on pretty tight but also has a strap with a clip. Suppose to be a low of 6 today and 4 tomorrow then teens for a couple of days. No snow so far... still glad I'm in FL.

The webcam at our NC house show a good amount of snow, over 3,000 ft above sea level, so not surprised. We are postponing our trip though for a day or two...

I'm sure if it rains it would snow. Last year cameras only picked up snow one day during the winter although it was enough to stay on the ground for a couple of days. I like it when you have highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s, but single digit and teens... yeah Imma pass on that one. It's freaking 2 degrees right now in Boone with a low of -6!!! Hell no!

Temperature wise, what day of this coming week would you be ok with traveling up that way... Our house is near Boone. We've got 2 little boys and our cat and dog and the last thing we want to deal with is dangerous roads or power outages. We got a text saying to limit the use of electronics for the next 24 hours, which doesn't directly apply to us of course since we are in Florida. We were going to go up on Mon, but Tues is looking more ideal. Been going our whole lives, but this storm seems to be hitting different .

I'm probably the wrong person to ask, I don't handle the cold very well, at least not for long periods. Weather says steady rise in temps starting Monday so personally I would go Monday or later in the week if I can. Doesn't show any snow, but honestly up there I dunno how accurate it is. Our house is south of Boone on lower elevation and we could have a nice sunny day, drive 30min to Boone and it's a freaking blizzard up there.

I'm happy the temps won't quite hit 0F tonight. Crazy weather ahead, though. Overnight *lows* later next week will be in the 50F range. That'll feel like Spring.

Very weird last 18 hours or so. Freezing rain coats everything (including my dog and llamas outside), but then temp suddenly comes up to 48F. We're up at 1300 foot elevation and the temp in Salem and Portland, Oregon, is still freezing and suddenly we're a balmy 48. I think this was a version of the cold air coming down the Columbia River gorge and hitting Portland, then hanging a left and pouring down the valley towards us, but hugging the ground. Meanwhile, we are above the cold. Not sure what happened, but I (selfishly) like it!

Only a few inches but the wind made a mess of it. I rarely got snow on the BBQ (under a 4' overhang). Should be light enough the clean it and the hot tub cover with the leaf blower.

6 degrees with 1" of snow lingering on the ground... and regional power supplier requiring all local utilities to enact rolling blackouts on the hour.

.... grrrrr. If we have more people and more industry move to an area to live and work, then we need to grow our power generation to meet the demand. We all knew that as kids playing SimCity.

Gotta charge up those cars, ya know. I don't think the folks who are pushing for 100% electric vehicles by the end of this decade are considering where their power is going to come from. California already has issues with their power grid and they want everyone to drive E-vehicles?

Warming up to a balmy 12F or so here, but still some serious wind. It's the wind that's the killer. Just going out to check the mailbox is painful.

We must be in the same area of TN. Fortunately I am on a grid with a Firestation, so haven't had a blackout yet, but everyone around me has.

How long do those rolling blackouts last? Hours or minutes?

We have been 10-12 minutes off every 40-60 minutes.

My issue is... this is not unprecedented weather. hahaha... this is unprecedented backward momentum of the infrastructure-to-society relationship. hahahahaa... It's 12deg F and sunny. No way should we need rolling blackouts to meet demand. ok. I'll settle down now. hahaha

Happy Holidays, and Merry Christmas everybody!
