Exactly that.

Mentally, once I get to the airport and the irrational thoughts take over, I'm just thinking that I will get on the flight and it WILL crash. There's obviously some tiny rational part of my brain still firing otherwise I wouldn't get on the flight at all.

Physically I'm sweating profusely, especially my palms, and I am normally not a sweaty person at all. I can also feel my heart beating inside my chest. I spend the entire flight like this whilst gripping onto the chair arms until my hands ache. Throw in the odd expletive or two each time the plane executes any type of manoeuvre or hits turbulence and you get the picture.

I figured this situation was unhealthy for me and unfair for other passengers to witness, especially children, so explained to my Doc and he gave me the diazepam. Now when I fly I can actually go to sleep sometimes or at the very least sit with my eyes closed and listen to music and not be a nuisance to others.

A tip for anybody else that may not enjoy flying. I use in ear monitors to listen to music as it blocks out all other sounds i.e. the planes engines. This helps me greatly to forget that I'm on a plane at all.

Me too! There has been a few occasions when the pills seemed to have a greater affect on me than they normally would and the resulting feeling of extreme tiredness has made me look and act like a stoner much to the amusement of my friends.

At the end of the day, I'm not letting my irrational fear spoil my life. I've flown to a lot of fantastic places and intend to keep on flying. Maybe one day I'll be able to do it without the pills.

I hear ya man....first time on a jumbo jet in turbulence I was experiencing same symptoms you mentioned...it definitely is scary and feels like crashing is inevitable....but I know it's pretty darned safe.
Good thing the Dr hooked you up with meds to deal with it better.
