10 days? No way... A pump site lasts four to five days max. Continuous glucose monitor can go longer, two weeks or more. My son occasionally wants a break from the pump and we go back to multiple daily but he quickly tires of the hassle and wants his pump back. Much easier for him to pull out the pump and bolus...

As for needles, obviously my son was not a fan when first diagnosed at five. But the pen needles are so tiny these days that he doesn't flinch at all and he has become a real pro at the blood drawn every quarter.

I've heard diabetes will generally lead to amputations of feet / legs (something to do with how the disease progresses). Is that true - is that only if you don't keep up with the insulin monitoring?

Or is that what will ultimately happen regardless?

As a secondary thought...if its true that a leg might have to be amputated, can they graft on a new leg?

Given your love of poultry, I was going to suggest a chicken leg. But then I thought you could use 1MOREMOD legs instead...they are basically interchangeable.

After all, both of the above animals have skipped leg day more than Huckleberry Finn skipped school.

I have, and it's works great (to STOP appetite) I will be eating a perfectly good dinner, and about 22 minutes after injection I push the plate away, sometimes nauseous to the point of gagging. It's almost dangerous if I take a bolus of insulin before the meal, because I may be unable to get the matching carbs into the system.

Since most of the studies I perform don't "allow" Symlin addicts on their programs, my endo sort of turns his head while his staff give me samples. He won't write me a script any more.

Right now, I'm working to get back to the King/prince/pauper eating amounts, so take the Symlin only with dinner. Have to ration the last two pens since I won't be back to see the staff until August.

I'd go chicken before 1MOREMOD . It's not a given or anything, it's a matter of control of the SWINGS in blood sugar. The tiny vessels throughout the body suffer from those blood sugar level swings, and micro-aneurisms occur. This can lead to peripheral gangrene and the loss of limbs.

I had to wake up a bit when they did those laser fixes in my eye. I remember vividly during initial diagnosis that I was going to take care of myself, I didn't want to lose any fingers/toes/go blind.
Diabetic neuropathy can be nasty, but is usually without pain. My wife's uncle did construction, and was a non-practicing diabetic. He came home one day and couldn't get his boot off. His niece tried, and found the nail thru his boot/foot. He didn't go back to work the next week because he no longer had a foot to put in his boot.

I used to work for Amylin and Symlin was always my favorite product to teach to medical professionals.

I showed this thread to my friend. You can imagine they've had a tough time lately and its solstice here so i sent them a link to this. The patents told me to tell you you're pretty fucking awesome for opening this to help out others and even when they are still just learning to handle their kid's situation and the life changes that will follow, they appreciate that you made this effort to raise awareness.

They also asked me about the rat but I'm too much of a man to confess.

It's a funny medium, but they can join and ask if they don't want to do 3rd party questions thru you. There's no "shame" in being diabetic. Their child didn't do anything "wrong" or "eat too much sugar" and they aren't "bad parents" for letting their kid get diabetes.

Although you aren't the best medium to convince them not to worry about their kid/Dr. visits . . . tell them mistakes will happen just like with any other child-rearing activity. The advances in treatment continue towards a cure. I used to inject beef and pork insulin. I'm not sure I even want to know how much suffering I am responsible for.

Their kid will grow up normal (relatively) and shouldn't have any stigma because of the disease. No laughing at the kid, no ostracizing or exclusion, no worries the other kids might "catch it" Well, at least not as a result of the diabetes.

There has never been anything I haven't eaten because of the diabetes.

Lol, they know, it just has been rough for them, and they needed a good laugh and you my friend have done a great job providing information and humor once again!

They have all the information needed and we have excellent and free healthcare here, and as an aunt substitute I have read it all too but i like getting real life tricks from people since the one thing i truly know about crisis situations is that you want to prepare. Since i take all of their kids with me often out too, i truly appreciate the tips you've shared.

The added perk of a thread like this is that awareness is added but for me handy tips such as the glucose carried around, and the absolute strictness in meal rhythm is something that needed to be said again.

An ordinary balanced diet works for me,
we all need carbs, for a DM, if you do not eat enough carbs, you get a rebound.
(at night usually) need a set amount of carbs, to stop you going low,
if you go too low, with not enough carbs or too much insulin,
your liver throws out some sugar to keep you alive and you wake up with a high

I found eating a good carb snack with a fat/protein, stopped that
Plus I'm on invokana (as a t2) which gets rid of excess sugar through urine
I'm also on insulin, but once a day now and half the amount

when I get that low, I get the shakes, almost like a panic attack,
and then I get mad crazy hungry
and hit the fridge

10 bowls of cereal, and 2 bottles of pop and a candy bar later, I'm fine LOLZ

one last thing, when I was first diagnosed, I was like "mega" anxious/strict
no candy, pop etc.

Then one day, after 3 months I hit a gas station and got a big choclate muffin
Sat in the car, opened the package, and just smelled it, then just licked it
then I said, only one small nibble. 30secsond later the whole thing was gone,
funnily enough I didn't die LOLZ

I also had emergency snacks in my house in all the rooms, in-case I had a hypo
One days I was just mega hungry and went round eating all of the snacks

I even tried hiding them in places which where awkward, like in the car.
3am in the morning, mega hungry (insulin) I went out there in my jammies and
wacked the lot

LOLZ

I don't miss those days now I'm on nearly half the insulin and only once a day
