Closest to #2. A bit obsessive about weight. Definitely got caught in the crosshairs on the hydraulic steering bit hah

I live in a climate where it rains basically 200 days out of the year. I like to be able to still enjoy spirited driving when the road conditions are suboptimal.

Also, I've driven RWD cars in the snow many times over the years, and while it's mostly fine (might need to hold a drift up a hill sometimes), it just does not give the feeling of stability during highway lane changes, etc. I really like having the extra confidence. I've always been one to get snow tires on a vehicle as well. In BC, the snow hits a little different because it's wet, and the roadways aren't properly cleared or prepped during those weather events.

Took my F22 M240i out this past winter and plowed snow up to the oil cooler grilles, still plugged along no issue.

Type 6:

The type that appreciates all cars at a mechanical level; loves to get really stuck into whatever car they're driving and seeks to understand it inside & out. Always ready to grab the wrench and doesn't keep the car as a garage queen - drives it as intended. Not concerned with saving their car for the next owner but takes pride in caring for their car for themselves. Loves to find and chat with other enthusiasts who are like minded regardless of brand, model, application, etc.

lol yep trying to explain to the little one yes it snowed. No it’s not the fun snow it’s the wet snow no snowman or sledding today lol. We get that here too. I think average person overlooks the simplest thing they can buy for their car the tires. Manufacturers go great lengths to tell you which tire is summer only which works best in rain snow so forth. And no all seasons don’t work best in snow lol
I know I’m preaching to the choir but the dead pan look I get from some people when I ask them if they wear sandals hiking or hiking boots to run a marathon. Why would you not look at tires the same. The one thing actually touching the road. I just see so many at my work big trucks big suvs and my e82 has more tread and season appropriate tires probably one of my biggest pet peeves. And people then wonder why they skid slamming on the brakes with awd lol I know bad soap box.

I also live in MI, and for me a rear wheel based AWD is a must as well for my Winter car. I have Severe Snow Service rated tires. I love it because it allows me to carry more speed out of corners, and absolutely launch from a light on snowy surface with a breeze. Better that rwd or fwd with winters. It would be even better with true winters.

I can see a perspective of someone wanting a winter beater in awd to feel more comfortable in various real winter conditions. Couldn’t drive the z when we get really dumped on due to ride height not necessarily because of rwd. But as talking from a performance enthusiast my first question of why awd is virtually a must, I guess that’s where I was originally going. I know bringing winter into it might’ve been bit of a mix but more showing a winter prepped rwd I’d much choose over awd that was not, which you gotta admit there’s a lot out there that rely on awd with all season in our real winters wondering why they spun out.

Have to agree RWD would be tiring in a constantly wet climate like BC. I picked it for the good days, and have to tolerate the bad. It is annoying to be stuck with 1/4 or half throttle. Fun can still be had in snow of course but it's just at a slower pace.

Lol, no matter how how many wheels are receiving torque from the car, you gotta respect the physics.

Oh yeah, for sure. AWD gives people a false sense of security on summer or at best all season tires. Plus most seem to forget it does nothing to help you stop.

My winter beater is a Merc GLC300. I like the rear wheel based AWD system in it, because it still allows me to drift and slide the tail out under power on snow. But if I want to do a quick launch off the line, the grip and power are both there too.

For a fun summer car, I totally agree. RWD all the way. I have a Camaro SS 1LE for that purpose. It's my fun summer car, and a weekend track warrior. Sux during the LONG Michigan winter months. Just sits there with battery disconnected.

"when driven well, a slow car is faster than a fast car" is a new one to me.
I always heard it was "more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow" which typically applied to underpowered cars.

Because that is the phrase.

"when driven well, a slow car is faster than a fast car" <-- makes no sense.

No that's a different idea altogether

The one I stated is the idea that the driver makes a difference and that a slow car can be faster than a fast car when driven well—-and that is most likely true, albeit a bit puzzling and without merit sometimes!

The driving makes a big big big difference between speeds of cars around a track.

Yep another way to think of it. Getting passed on track is ALWAYS being passed by the faster driver, not necessarily the faster car. Most faq on open track day breakdowns will talk about this when discussing designated passing zones.

What about,

"Smug occasional-asshole who wax and wanes poetically about a Saab 9000 or W123 but still drives a modern machine and looks abhorrently at coal-rolling pick up douchenozzles"?

I think there is an 'under the radar enthusiast'. The guy that likes to blend in and not draw unwanted attention but is packing 700hp in a stealth tuned 4dr saloon sleeper.

Is there such thing as a mid-range and maybe confused enthusiast?
  • Drives only one car (not counting spouse's fancy but soulless SUV), so the one car has the impossible task of being everything
  • Likes the sound and linearity of a NA V8 but realizes that brisk urban driving is more about low end torque than high end horsepower
  • Enjoys the control of a manual transmission but has given up on them for multiple reasons
  • Prefers an ICE with crazy power but also cares about the environment
  • Likes modern tech but sometimes thinks it goes too far - gesture control

Freaking hilarious list...I've seen all of these people, too. We all have.

Of course, I fit in a few of the categories, but, in short;

I'm a "purist." It's all about how the throttle, wheel and brakes affect the four contact patches. Engine, clutch, trans, etc all don't matter, and if you're good enough, then it'll be fast enough. The "purist" believes they are the best mod to any car, and that a Honda Accord can be just as fun as a GT3 if you're doing it right.
