Sounds like he got off easy ($1300 sounds cheap for an M3) and I suspect he's done that pull many times, nor just twice.

Yeah I was going to say. If he's only launched 2x, BMW must have some shitty craftsmanship.

Entertaining video. Self-deprecating humor is funny.

Can this shit happen only if you dump the clutch a higher revs???

Or can it also happen if you launch the car normally, but quickly???

Thanks

I busted U-joint on a US Army jeep while on patrol along the Czech border back in the 80s. We were farting around doing roll-backs and popping the clutch and the U-joint just snapped. Oops. The unit had a policy that patrols would not be cancelled or cut short for any reason, so they sent out a new U-joint and we had to replace it right there within sight of the border.

Nothing to do with this video except it reminded me of that day. I got called on the carpet later that night because some general had driven by and saw me working under the jeep without my helmet on. Sometimes the Army is really dumb when it comes to things like that.

Probably because at 3:15, he really sounds/behaves a lot like Adam Sandler.

+1 I need to know this too. If he released clutch quickly but not dumped it from ~3-3.5k RPM would it still bust? That seems odd.

Good video. I didn't realize how small the splines on the 1/2 shaft were. I thought the driveshafts were pretty thin to start out with (including my car) but the splines are just cut into the shafts. Even toy rc cars have the u-joints and splines reinforced (bigger diameter) than the axle.

Most people have no idea how carefully designed car parts are. They don't realize that they are designed not to fail within a certain cost/risk window and extra strength is no longer included. Most of the time you never see a drive shaft or axle so everyone assumes they're big and strong. Even to me it seems bizarre to see the tiny exposed drive axles on a Japanese SUV when you're driving behind one.
