This same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago but with a DSLR. Turns out someone swapped out the camera with a lower end used model and put the corresponding manual for that in the box. Thankfully I noticed the difference (the Rebel XSi and XTi look nearly the same except for SD vs CF, and I needed SD) as soon as I got home and went back to the store. After arguing for 10 minutes with the camera department guy they brought to customer service (who accused me of swapping the cameras), the store manager allowed me to exchange it as I bought it only around 45 minutes prior.

People are taking advantage of Walmart (perhaps employees?) in these desperate times, so be careful. Had they not allowed me to exchange the camera (they would not let me return), they would have had a dispute with my CC.

Never buy expensive items from Walmart...

FIXT! I dropped the extraneous "expensive" from your post. That advice right here will prevent all manner of bad experiences.......

Things you can safely buy at walmart.

Waste Bins
a mirror
a universal tv remote
and a $5 watch

Anything else, I'd probably go somewhere else.

not trying to bash you or anything, but in these circumstance, these companies don't give a shit. Its our own responsibility to look at the good in detail before we purchase it.
its not that hard to tell from the box that it's been opened before or whether or not it has the factory seal on it. never buy open box items. Personally, I'd never even buy refurbished computers.

good luck with your situation

Here is what happen, someone bought a computer some time ago, had a problem with, it was out of warranty so they went and bought same or similar model new, put the old computer in the box and returned it for credit. The stores are usually suppose to open the box and check it out and make sure the serial number match. but obviously that did not happen. So you were the unlucky one to get the box with the bad laptop.

If you paid with a credit card, file a complain with them would be the best solution. but it will take time to get your money back. You could always do what the other person did to you. Just return it for credit and hope they do not notice the serial number issue.

This sounds reasonable.

Negative publicity is the fastest way to get something resolved.

Then they pack it back up in front of you and hand it over. There's no doubt once you sign the final paperwork that you're getting what you paid for.

What you should have done is when the employee handed you the computer you should've opened it then and there and made sure everything was on the up and up. If any of the employees have a problem with it, tell them to speak to a manager. If the manager has a problem with it, take your business elsewhere. Of course, most places would require you to buy the item first, which is reasonable, but in that case just do the same thing. After you pay, open up the item and inspect it right then and there. DO NOT leave the store without inspecting what you bought in full view of the employees and cameras.

Yep. Hindsight is always 20/20.

^ Yeah that. Sounds like good advice, but if i am buying a (supposedly) brand new item, i wouldn't take the time to open it in the store. Sounds like an inspection of the box would have been sufficient in this case.
