If it bothers you that much, go work at mcdonalds. I'm sure nobody will care if you pull up in a civic or evo.

The business world revolves around the impression you make on people. Employers are judgemental, deal with it.

If you take the train to work and will literally never be seen in your car then drive whatever you want. If not, prepare to be judged. It's a cruel world...

Unfortunately not everyone is a car person. Back when I bought my STi in 2005 I was looking at the G35. I really liked the car a lot, great looks and fun to drive. THen I drove the STi and realized I didn't care what the car looked like because it was so much damn fun to drive I had to have it.

My profession is stereotyped as being a bunch of penny pinchers, especially when it comes to cars. My old boss made over 200k a year and drove a '97 Jeep Grand CHerokee. I almost get discriminated for actually having a nice car, let alone two cars.

What you're ignoring is what's more important - how we see ourselves. People do grow up you know - not everyone wants to wear jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers their entire lives. I know American culture is all about being a teenager as long as possible - often far longer than sensible - but some people quite enjoy behaving like grown-ups. There ought to come a day when a man walks up to his lime-green Civic with wing and fart-can and thinks to himself "I'm too old for this shit."

Maturity is not a dirty word, and despite everyone's insistence that they're mature, I tend to believe it more when someone's lifestyle reflects that, instead of expecting me to look past their boy-racer car, flip-flops, torn jeans, and Green Lantern t-shirt.

If someone wants to buy a car because of what others think of it, so what? Maybe what they really want is a car that others will like, maybe that is what makes them happy to drive that car. You may not like choosing a car this way, but does that make it wrong?

Sometimes you just want to buy what you want to buy. You can't always apply logic to everything we purchase.

Who cares what people think..

Only shallow people care about what others drive. A car does not make the person.. No matter how these Gordon Gekko or Paris wannabees think..

When choosing my doc or lawyer etc.. I look for education, professionalism and or work experience not what kind of car he or she may drive.

Corporate business types? It's funny, if you think about it..They seem to live in a world with the same mentality as as scam artists, gangsters and drug dealers.

To be serious..I have a quite a few friends in the professional world.. Material wealth (showoff) and such preoccupies mainly the younger folks..But the older folk? You better know your sh*t, cause driving a fancy car would save you, if your an incompetent fool.

So ignore em and drive what ya want.

You don't have to have an expensive car to be professional. Just like you don't have to have a $3,000 suit on to be professional. You can get a $500 suite and still look good. Likewise, you don't have to have a new BMW/Merc/Audi/Lex etc to be professional (or to even look it). A nice Maxima or Accord will usually do the job.

I agree with you 100%. If you want to be like others, go ahead. But that means you have to REALLY be like them. You should not only try to emulate their choices in cars, but you should also emulate their purchasing habits and the fact that they are one paycheck from being bankrupt. You should do your best to make sure that you are schedule for retirement in 2055 like them too.
You don't have to succumb to social pressures just because everyone else is doing it. I thought we all learned that in high school and in the first couple of years in college.

Your maturity breakdown.

First impressions are everything.

Any further explanation shouldn't even be required but, If your professional job is to handle clients then they need to feel comfortable with you from the initial get go. Why should a client have faith in someone they don't know? Do you read the same news that I do everyday? I sure as hell wouldn't give most poeple the benefit of the doubt if they showed up in what I consider to be an unprofessional manner. Whether they were unkempt themselves or their car wasn't appropriate. A large part of it is simply using the correct tool for the job. You don't need a car that is super expensive, but it should be modern to give the illusion of safety and comfort. A passat may pass, as long as you don't slap the 'bing wing' on it. The quoted poster above probably doesn't even realize yet that he just put out a great argument for why it is in fact so important.

If anyone gets WTH your saying with your so called breakdown (especially with all your grammar errors) I'd gladly give em a cookie..

I just love it when some internet genius takes a simple and half sarcastic opinion and turns it into some kinda anal pseudo thesis....

Thank god we all don't have one collective mind...

Quoted for truth. Clients, especially higher end ones, want to feel as though the person handling their money is responsible and mature (key word). If you show up in a murdered car with big wing, many people are going to look negatively towards your maturity, whether it be correct or not. The goal is not for the client to look past these things to see the person you truly are inside... the goal is to give the impression of these things from the get go.

Give me a cookie then, chocolate chip please... then go find a blue-collar job.

Edit: How old are you, Poorman? I ask because I see many younger people on this board, and I wouldn't have understood this thread when I was 19.

Agree with your analogy as well. Surprising how some people get so irritated when all we're saying is.. Do what YOU want.. Simple freedom of choice.

It's like some people are incapable of thinking on their own. Sad really..

I'd ask that you re-read my response without being so defensive. I Think I saw 1 typo, and 1 'a' which should of been an 'an'. Not too bad for a rough draft of a psuedo thesis.

Regardless, if you have a job in customer relations then what you want or care about is pretty irrelevant. Since the customer always comes first. I can't really think of a situation beyond customer relations in which your car would have much of a factor, aside from a company loaned truck. If your a doctor/lawyer with a Lancer and you don't like being profiled, park in the back.

Ironic, telling poeple they shouldn't copy other poeple but then encouraging them to do what they want. Perhaps to the buyer the ambiguity of being one of many is appealing. Everyone has their own reason and criteria for purchasing a car. This thread sounds mostly like sour grapes to me.

@11PAST9

I hate bmw I own one I had to have one did and it's my last one.
I'm not a badge whore at all.

I noticed that all your post are made to bash Bmw. What do you drive anyways? I dont care if you drive a sentra or something else your still welcomed here. Trust me there are a few cool car guys around here (that can turn a wrench).

I agree that bmw(or any other premium brand) around here are driven by douche rockin pink shirts with their popped collars and big Paris Hilton style kind of glass. But I still see some cool guys driving M's with regular clothes and not acting like their poop doesnt stink.

There is no need to make a thread about it or mention it in every topic.
