Say I own 1000 shares in a company for over a year, buy 500 and then sell some with 6 months. If I sell 300 would it be taxed under long term rules or short term? What about 700?

You can sell "lots", in other words you can choose which shares you sell.

When you sell the 300 shares, you can choose whether or not to sell shares held long term or short term, given your example.

As an experiment, log into your brokerage account and go through the steps necessary to sell shares. You should come to a screen or selection where you choose "lots". This is how Fidelity's trading platform works. Schwab's appears to be similar.

vanguard also allows you to choose which stocks to sell by buy groupings, or even FIFO

Unfortunately Robinhood offers no such option, but maybe they will offer it someday. Makes me wonder if they would sell long term holdings first if there was a sale that would benefit from that. Something I do not know

@Humdizzle I generally don’t talk specific stocks. On the several discussion boards I participate, I have found the discussion to degrade when that happens.

What I prefer to talk about is method and process to find investments. Several people using the same process and method will arrive at successful portfolios with different holdings.

I am generally a fundamental investor, this fits my personality and career history. Buffett and Lynch are easy examples of fundamental investors. I analyze SEC reports, balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, investor presentations and analyst research reports. And technical chart analysis is thrown in for good measure. I take a lot of time before choosing an investment, I realize not everyone wants to do this, or has the time or skills to do it.

Guiding ideas for me:
- buy what you know
- growth and value are not mutually exclusive
- growth is good: revenue and gross margin growth are the core of this
- debt is generally to be avoided all else being equal
- seek to increase portfolio Sharpe and Sortino ratios
- seek to reduce price to earnings ratio and asset correlation within the portfolio
- seek diversification in terms of market cap and sector
- volatility is not always bad and might be the price of performance/yield
- in the case of mutual funds or etfs, higher expense ratio is not necessarily to be avoided if returns are there and the fund holdings fit your criteria as stand alone investments

I purchase stocks by the principle "buy what you know" as well. I would modify it to be "buy what you know and you like, bonus if you can identify an audience (customers) that generally also likes it". I break this rule in a few exceptions, I will buy something I hate but believe it's audience likes it enough and will grow.

That's what I'm seeing. Some schizophrenic movement up and down, but overall it's averaged out pretty flat. Today aside, I'm about right where I was to start the month.

I'm in 10 percent cash in each of brokerage and retirement accounts, some would say that's conservative. Despite that I am bullish, market may not take off like a rocket immediately but I am expecting Q3 earnings to be stellar, especially for reopen plays

I learned that lesson in 2008, watching some of my racing buddies who took an early retirement have to sell their toys and get McJobs because their retirement accounts took a big hit.

My employer has a super-generous 12% match for my 5% retirement contribution. Taking a lesson from a gambler friend of mine, I put my 5% into a guaranteed interest thingy, and put my employer's 12% (aka: playing with the house's money) into riskier non-guaranteed equities and real estate. Peace of mind that my money is 100% safe, with a guaranteed minimum 3% return every year.....
