The people that complain about a BMW's weight, are the same jokers that have never had a BMW save their life!

Panic attack? Must have stepped on the throttle too hard... those JB3's are scary

(j/k, glad you're ok)

It is befuddling me that people are asking for this guys parts.

Why would you want wrecked parts? Why would you want a guy who just survived a crash to have to go scrounging around in the car he wrecked in for parts?

He was not hurt, he didnt hurt anyone else and hopefully he will stay in the BMW family seeing as it saved his bacon.

1st) Glad you are ok, thats all that matters...

2nd) Why did the curtain bags blow? With no damage to either side of the vehicle, I would have thought the car would be smart enough not to use them. You know, like its smart enough not to use the passenger front if there is no one in the front passenger seat.

Regardless, the car is most likely totaled, had it not be, however, I would have tried to get BMW to pick up the tab on those side bags, I don't see why they blew. Does the cars movement have some type of role in that determination?

Wow--glad to see that you are ok.

My lady is always telling me that my car isn't safe--glad to know it would handle better than she thought.

I think it is not always as easy as we might think--I was Tboned by a TrailBlazer in my E92 back in 2007--my car was totaled--and no airbags came out.

I was really surprised at the time. In this case, I am surprised the steering wheel airbag did not deploy.....

Now that we all know your ok I can ask the question....What the hell is up with your wheels? I don't think I've ever seen such build up of brake dust in my life.

My doctor said driving would not be an issue. I'm with you 100%, and won't be driving for a good month, and after having every test in the book done. Needless to say I feel lucky that it was a pole and not a human being.

As for the side curtains, it was a frontal offset at ~40mph, I think they're supposed to blow in a frontal offset.

Brake Dust: Hadn't washed car in ~3 weeks, and the 1er brakes put off crazy amounts of dust.

Update on tests:

24 hour Holter was fine, MRI was fine. Still waiting on hormone panel.

They're going to do a stress echo in addition to resting. Meds should not interfere, Lamictal is an anti-convulsant and has no particular effect on heart rate.

Wow glad you're ok! I didn't even know the 1er had side curtain airbags in the rear... nice to know it's safer than I thought it was =)

If you get another 135i put the 1addicts sticker on straight this time =D

Believe it or not I used a ruler. I think it's the angle of the photo.

The coverage of the side curtains is awesome. I don't think there's anything you can hit your head on with them deployed.

Main airbag is good design also. Almost completely open on the sides, so it deflates instantly. I'm not joking when I say the crash was completely painless, which is unreal.

I'm honestly thinking of springing for an E92 M3 after seeing how well the 1er held up. I know I'd feel safe

Well if you fainted I assume you wouldn't feel much pain during the crash =)

Go for the M3, there's some great deals on them these days!

I'm debating, and want to see what insurance gives me.

I'm kinda down to:

S2000+Turbo with newish Camry :-D

E46 M3 + money in the bank (and maybe into this low, low market...)

Z4MC + used Camry

E92 M3

Loved my 1er, but with the deals going on the M3, it's tough to ignore. I don't think the M is $25,000 better. However, I do think it's $10,000-$15,000 better.

That's getting a bit ahead of things.

Dmboone25, show her the pics. I am COMPLETELY unscathed, which is unreal. A telephone pole is about the worst stationary object you can hit, also. TONS of point force. I think only a tree would be worse. I'm pretty confident I would have walked away if I hit it at highway speeds, but I certainly never want to find out.

I'll definitely be sending some letters/pics in to Roundel and the BMW CCA rag! Safety is important, and I think the car performed unreasonably well. Absolutely 0 intrusion into the passenger compartment in that kinda crash is crazy. Windshield wasn't even cracked, nor was the dash. Seeing it in person is more impressive, because it's tough to capture scale... the indentation in the front end is impressively deep.

At any rate, I'll see if I can dig up info on the wrecker for you guys. Nothing in the engine is good, and I'd put money on the tranny being shot (petty sure I saw tranny fluid on the ground), but there are three good wheels, brakes are probably all good, along with the interior bits. Spare tire is ok also!

Good to hear your ok. I've had a couple close calls myself over the years. I hope whatever you get next gives you as much enjoyment as the 1er surely did.

Yeah. I truly hope all works out well for you in the end. You don't wanna lose your license for a while due to medical reasons! Happened to my friend after he had a seizure (not while driving, though). I felt terrible for him - senior year of high school and no car.

It will be 2 weeks before I get the final verdict from my docs in all likely-hood, and I probably won't be driving for a month no matter what they tell me, just to confident I'm ok. Self-enforced suspension of license, heh. It's not worth the risk until I'm sure.

It was absolutely terrifying waking up in an airbag and not knowing what I hit. I breathed a HEAVY sigh of relief when I got out of the car and saw it was a telephone pole (never thought I'd be able to say that).
