Yeah I remembered reading somewhere that both BMW and Mercedes have learned from the hatchback C (LK??) failure. Thus BMW chose to make a coupe for the states instead of bring a hatch over. Be it a 1 series or a no series at all, a BMW is a BMW. I would love to own a 1 series- I think it's a fun car. |

I am glad that more people can share in the BMW experience. In the long run, this will lure more and more away from Asian and WV cars. In and of itself, this is great news.

Does the fact that more people could afford a BMW make you less cool, or your car less desireable? Hardly. This looks, as others have said, to be an attempted return to BMW's roots, which was a small, fast, light, and nimble car. My E92 is actually a pretty big car--I think the new 1 would be a little more on the lines of what I truly wanted. The Mini is too small, the 3 is getting awfully big--the 1 seems to be a perfect go-between, with some awesome engines to choose from. I, for one, am excited.

I remember reading an interview with the head of BMW Canada about a year ago and he was bemoaning the ever-increasing weight of todays cars. He said then that the 1 Series was his favourite BMW to drive.
RWD, less weight, sweet inline 6 - I think it could have all the ingredients for a great car. |

Anyone who would be concerned with such a thing is someone who bought their car for the badge. It's also pretty funny that you own BMW's current cheapest offering. The 1 series will be a better driver's car than any other in BMW's line up if they get it right. Even if I had Warren Buffet's money I'd take a 135i over a 335i every time. |

Well what's wrong with people buying the 1-series? If anything BMW should be happy, at least they are giving a chance to those out there who would like to own a bmw but maybe can't afford a 3-series, 5-series etc.
I'm sure the BMW community won't accept them, because I think we are pretty high on ourselves as it is, but that is our problem not theirs.

I don't see who the target market is. It's probably a $30,000-35,000 car at least which rules out the teens who typically buy small pocket rockets (minus the trust fund babies in Cali). Many of the people who already own 335's and 328s have graduated from other cars and although this may have a big engine it's still a downgrade in car. If the person buying this car cares anything about looks or practicality there are many better options in the same range.
It seems strange that they try to create a car for the more common market but will probably place it in the midrange of the 3 series. |

There is no way a big heavy e90 series car would be better than something lighter if it was done right. The heavy, bloated current gen 3 series platform is FAR from ideal when it comes to handling and performance. If you read my post you would have seen that it said IF BMW gets it right. The 1 series coupe isn't out yet so you don't know how it will handle and neither do I. A twin turbo 1 series certainly has all the potential to be a far better car than a 335i. You should practice what you preach when you say "First, you guys should look at it before you make such comments." My post was purely hypothetical while yours was telling everyone how a car that isn't even out yet handles. |

I don't think the 3 ever was aimed as being a low weight sports car, it is inevitable as more conveniences and safety are in our cars that the weight will increase. It doesn't seem to hurt the 3 series, it has been at the top of it's class in performance, handling, and with decent MPG for the past decade. |

What you're saying doesn't really make sense. You're saying that since the 1 series coupe won't be a tiny sports car but a sub compact car people who currently drive evos, stis and G35s won't want it. Do you realize that the Evo and STI are subcompact sedans? Why would anyone cross shop a torque steer front wheel drive Japanese hatch back with a rwd 300hp German coupe? They are totally different cars. The Mazda is a good car, but its performance will be nowhere near a 135i's. The 3 series was much more of a driver's car in past generations. I've driven all of them and the e30 and e36 were much more engaging to drive than the e90. Its increasing bulk and numbness to the road may not seem to hurt the 3 series, but it is most certainly losing potential customers. I am one of them. If the 335i's engine were in a car similar in size to an e36 I'd be driving one right now. There are many others like me out there. BMW is filling a huge gap in their line up, and I think they will do very well with it. |
