Impaired Driving Prevention Technology Sounds like a good idea?
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Advanced Impaired Driving Prevention Technology Distracted Driving: NHTSA defines “driver distraction” as inattention that occurs when drivers divert their attention away from the driving task to focus on another activity. In general, distractions derive from a variety of sources including electronic devices, such as navigation systems and mobile phones, as well as conventional distractions such as sights or events external to the vehicle, interactions with passengers, and eating or drinking. Section 24220 defines “Advanced Drunk and Impaired Driving Technology” as a system that (A) can— (i) passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired; and (ii) prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if an impairment is detected; or (B) can— (i) passively and accurately detect whether the blood alcohol concentration of a driver of a motor vehicle is equal to or greater than the blood alcohol concentration described in section 163(a) of title 23, United States Code; and (ii) prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit is detected; or (C) is a combination of systems described in subparagraphs (A) and (B).97 This means that a final rule could require vehicles be equipped with a system that detects whether the driver is impaired (an impairment-detection system); a system that detects whether the driver’s BAC is above a specified threshold (a BAC-detection system); or a combination of these two systems. These options and the technology that might fulfill each option are discussed in greater detail later in this document. NHTSA reviewed several available and prototype camera-based driving monitoring systems that publicly state the ability to monitor aspects of driver state, including driver’s eye gaze, eyelid/eye closure, pupil size, head/neck position, posture, hand/foot position, and facial emotion during the driving task. https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.go...n-12-12-23.pdf |

That what I do too. I wouldn't say all the EV drivers have shitty driving skills but most are (including parking skill). Think back when people have to drive a manual shift, no computer assist driving, you need to know your shit before you are out on the road. Now it is completely opposite, everyone think they know their shit.

Poor phone signal is hitting the UK’s electric car drivers
04/08/2024 Electric vehicle (EV) drivers could struggle to use around two-thirds of Britain’s most common type of public chargepoint because of patchy mobile signals. The study found that 66% of Type-2 chargers – which have speeds of up to 8kw – in Britain excluding London are in areas where at least one mobile network provider does not have usable 4G coverage. “Where signal connectivity at a chargepoint is a problem, drivers might conclude that the charger is at fault, hence undermining the confidence we should be building in the reliability of public charging options for electric vehicles.” https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/m...-b2524984.html Happened to me the other day, I was trying to fill up my Toyota Tacoma ICE and I didn't have cell service so I ran out of gas trying to find cell service. Tesla Trial to Size Up Cause of Fatal Autopilot Crash: Driver or Tech
April 8, 2024 Tesla is preparing for one of the biggest tests of its driver-assistant Autopilot: defending the company’s position that drivers, not the automaker, are ultimately responsible for crashes that involve the technology. In a wrongful-death suit set for trial this week, a jury will determine who is at fault in the 2018 fatal crash involving 38-year-old Apple engineer Walter Huang. The driver died on Highway 101 in California after his Model X sport-utility vehicle crashed into a highway barrier while he was using Tesla’s driver-assistance technology. Tesla says Huang is responsible because he was playing a videogame while the vehicle was engaged in Autopilot. Government investigators and the Huangs agree that he was distracted in the moments leading up to the crash, but the family says Tesla is at fault because of its marketing of Autopilot. https://archive.is/eM0dj#selection-6027.0-6031.200 |

Tesla Settles Over Fatal Autopilot Crash on Eve of Trial
(Bloomberg) -- Tesla Inc. reached a settlement on the eve of its highest-profile trial yet over a crash involving Autopilot, the driver-assistance system Elon Musk has billed as crucial to his pursuit of self-driving cars. Terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed in court filings made public Monday in state court in San Jose, California. The trial would have featured testimony from several current and former Tesla engineers. The settlement comes as Musk has vowed to unveil Tesla’s robotaxi on Aug. 8, four months from now. As electric vehicles become more mainstream, Tesla’s push into artificial intelligence and autonomous driving has been key to its lofty valuation. Beyond their claims against Tesla, the Huangs also alleged that California’s transportation department was partly to blame for failing to fix the barrier that had recently sustained damage from another crash. Had it been repaired, they said, it might have absorbed the impact of the Model X collision and saved Walter Huang’s life. The court’s docket indicates that the claims against the highway department are still pending. https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news...dc48b311&ei=32 Moral of this story is in America you can be very stupid, ignore the law and get very rich but you'er are still dead. |

If you are a middle income family with a baby and the Li battery goes boom with no warranty then you are srrewed, she says.
If you like rock or any music loud in your EV, with a/c on of course, then the range decreases even more..with using WOT, the colder it gets has you worrying and should you break down for no reason then a new nightmare begins as EV can't be moved by normal breakdown procedure and is electric shock risk except for specialised EV handler who has to switch the battery off before somehow loading the over-heavy POS onto a low loader. * oh to add the incapacitated EV can't be towed. The list continues more and more as people who didn't realize, as she says, are handing them back for gas cars and the forecourts are getting fuller by the minute of unwanted EV's. You would think that, given the cost of living and the exodus already underway from the Golden State, nobody would be trying to make California more expensive than it already is. According to a Wednesday report from The Associated Press, an environmentalist group called Friends of the Earth is suing the U.S. Department of Energy over its decision to award funds to keep California's last remaining nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon, open. The DOE awarded $1 billion to keep the plant open past its planned 2025 closure date after Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom said shuttering Diablo Canyon, which provides 9 percent of the state's power, would leave California vulnerable to blackouts, according to regional conservative outlet The Center Square. California the "Crash Test Dummy" of stupid ideas is always on the cutting edge of dumb. |

Once a function or activity is automated, human nature pretty much dictates that the function or activity will not be supervised. Same goes for driving. Partially automate it and attention levels drop to near zero. Isn't it easier to drive a car than watch it drive? It is for me. |

Let's be clear though, the state of California is not the one trying to close the nuclear plant, it's Friends of the Earth which is headquartered in DC. This lawsuit isn't going anywhere and neither is the plant so this story is meaningless to this EV thread.
