This was where I spent my 70th birthday last month -

West Coast Weather by Alan Butterfield, on Flickr

Typical weather for the West Coast of Scotland. This was above Loch Shiel, looking back towards Glenfinnan.

Great rainbow Alan.

When we traveled in Cumbria a couple of years ago, we ran into much of that weather, but were blessed to have the sun come out here and there, showing great rainbows. You just needed to be ready.

Thanks Mark.

Thanks Dave.
When I lived and worked down in Yorkshire we used to go over to The Lake District (Cumbria) a couple of times a year, for the climbing and photography. Pretty much like we go over to the West coast of Scotland now.
Always some good shots to be had.

I've been told this is a rough-legged hawk. A first for me.

Thanks Dave. It was a tough morning exposure wise, as fog was rolling over the area in patches, making me have to change settings every few minutes, and even seconds.

That shot was like +3EV, so the only way to get it is in Manual mode. For birds, I've gone almost 100% Manual. Occasionally, when the lights behind me and very even, I'll go to Av mode. In manual, you have to be constantly monitoring when the conditions are changing. It's worth the effort.

For any kind of wildlife now, i just use manual. In the high contrast environment I usually shoot in (bright overcast skies, etc) the meter is too easily fooled and the auto modes just underexpose the heck out of everything, or change every other shot. I take a base reading on the hillside or whatever, then chimp to my satisfaction, and check frequently throughout the day. I have gotten a lot better at it lately, and have way more properly exposed shots.

I use the meter and also take sample shots, since they're "free". I've got the highlight warning activated. I don't totally avoid highlights blinking, but keep it to minimal, unimportant details.
