RIP
Rio, my pet canary. Found him all fluffed up at bottom of cage 8am.
I went to clean his cage and give him fresh food, he had already passed away.

Just last week he let my wife and 3yr old hand feed him which is very rare for canaries.
I will bury him with his toy in back yard.

Some new pictures of the kittens. I swear they look like the cartoon cat puss in boots from the shrek films.

Oh. Also, we are now up to a total of 4 opossums. Odd animals, it's like God ran out of parts and just reused a bunch from other animals.

I think God came around asking who wanted to be pretty, and the possum thought he said "shitty" and said "Nope, not me!"

I'm a sucker for gray tabby cats. I grew up with one, and we have two at home now.

Same here. This little sweetheart adopted me back in 2002 and is still dispensing unconditional love on a daily basis.

Oh man, that little guy is adorable in that picture. My oldest tabby was an abandoned stray that adopted me over 13 years ago. He's also a total sweetheart and an attention whore.

I found her in my garage late one night as I was putting my motorcycle away after a ride. She was newborn and still had a nub of umbilical cord hanging off of her tummy. Her mother may have moved the litter, as they do often, and me riding into the garage may have scared her off when she came back for this last one, who knows. I knew right away I couldn't leave her there, helpless and alone. I brought her in and bottle-fed her. We have a really special bond, much more close than you'd have with a kitten you bring home at 10 or 12 weeks old. I'll be a wreck when she leaves me.

Ugh, what a heavy thing for those kids to have to grapple with. A teachable moment, I suppose. An opportunity to talk about the cycles of life.

"Then, as suddenly as he'd come into our lives... he was gone. And our adventure was over." ("Captain Ron" movie)

It was inevitable, after all. When choosing a pet you should mind it's lifespan. In particular, don't die before it does unless you have someone you can trust to take it over.

Children will have to learn there's no joy without sorrow: what would be happiness if there were no unhappiness? It's inevitable too.

"What is life? It's a torturous death. What is death? It's an eternal life. Life or death - no difference." (some kung-fu movie, "The Legendary Strike"?)

So I've always wanted a Ocelot! A friend of my parents had one and I spent several times playing with it when I was like 12. I was so captivated over this large, exotic cat!
I literally said I would own one at some point. Obviously now that I'm older and wiser, I realize the ginormous complications of attempting to own and raise this Wild Animal.
I grew up with a pet cat and later discovered I'm actually allergic to them. And also my wife is afraid of cats. Guess I'm SOL.

Wow, I bet you guys do after finding her alone at that age. You more than likely saved her life.

Maybe, but she definitely saved mine. I was at a real low point, with a sucky job and a violent drug-addicted wife. Having her to take care of might have made the difference when I thought about maybe not sticking around any longer. It's as if God or the universe or whatever looked at the two of us and said, "You two aren't doing so hot. Work together and help each other out." And we did.
