Look you're buying him a car. He should be thankful you're even considering something that expensive. Since he's young my only advice would be to keep from buckling and getting him something like an Evo or Sti or any car that can be highly modified for cheap.

Im only 21 and have friends from 16 upwards and its defiantly a gay car to young people. Especially when they know how muc hthe car costs and compare it to the cost of other cars, makes it even more gay.
These comments are the most immature in this thread to date. You have a skewed view of the world IMHO.

agreed, thats why I said a civic, it is about the best first car for any teen, money, upkeep, fuel, etc.
my other option for my kid is a small pickup, one with only a front seat.
big suvs are mor dangerous for teens.along with minivans, etc. it turns into the party mobile.
less seats=less friends=safer.

I took my M3 in for the break in service yesterday, and while I was waiting there was a yellow Mini S being delivered. It wasn't that light pastel yellow, it was fairly dark. The car looked really good, I would drive one in a minute if I wanted a car in that price range.

And there you go, its personal preference. I clearly dont want to drive a mini and you clearly dont want to drive a M Coupe.
The OP son probably has strong feelings one way or another about certain cars so it should be up to him. Like i posted earlier.

Quote:
I'm just saying the kid is gonna get a lot of crap his way.
Kids dont think "ow wow u got a brand new car"
They think "the mini cost $xxxxx why didnt you get this (insert car here) instead?"

OP you should just give your kid a set amount of money and some criteria to follow, such as must have air bags front and sides, must be under so many kms, must be xxxx build date or newer, must not exceed xxx power and let him research his own info and let him find what he thinks is best for that criteria and whats gonna make him happiest.

To me a car is a very personal choice and i would rather buy a cheap car with my own money that i 100% me then be given a car i didn't like by my parents and that's the bottom line really it should be what he feels comfortable in and what hes gonna love.

I'd love to drive either a Cooper S or a M coupe. I guess I need to check my own man card.

Is it a girly car? That's what my son thinks.

He wants something along the lines of a used WRX, 350z, Civic, etc. But financing those cost more money and plus to maintain them will cost extra knowing they are out of warranty.

Now, what would you guys do? Can he make it look like a sleeper? Can you get over the girly vibe with car?

He is 50/50 with the idea,

any thoughts you guys?

I think Mini is a good start for young drivers. If I have a 16 year old son, I would get him a Mini.

Make sure you get him a stick! Gotta learn it the hard way.

Okay guys. Thanks!

Well, like I said as some people have not read, my son is a BETTER driver than ME!

Lol. Just saying that because a lot of posts are in the speed factor..

My son is in the junior drifting league and he tracks my car most of the time!

Back to topic,
well, I was young once and I remember, no matter how much or how new, if the car was "girly", they automatically throw the whole price and brand new thing out of the window. I am thinking of a MS3, WRX, or like an Si. It just depends, I want my kid to be happy as he makes me proud and I think he deserves it.

Give your son your car and get a new one for yourself. Maybe the new 7.

Here's my two cents:

I have 5 kids. My 3 girls are too young to drive (14,13,8), but I'm thinking used X5 when the time comes.

As for your son, I have 2 sons (19,18) who are now in college together. When oldest was 16, His first car was a 1999 Volvo S80. A real tank. The car was a piece of crap and cost me a pretty penny in repairs, but it was worth it to know that unless he drove off a mountain, the car would protect him. When he proved he could drive after 2 years, I eventually got him a used 04 325i on Ebay for 20K. The car is flawless, and provides some sort of protection in an accident, although I would admit it is not the safest car on the road. My boys share the 3 series and have it with them in college.

My advice would be that you are starting with the wrong question. The issue with a 16 year old is protection. PERIOD. You will be sitting at home thinking about that Mini 5 feet away from 18 wheeler tires on the highway. In my opinion whether the car is Macho or effeminate misses the point. As you can see, the Mini can look pretty bad ass, but for a 16 year old it's the wrong car. Your son will have the rest of his life to to own his dream car. Right now I would recommend a Toyota Tacoma pickup or other reliable, bulletproof vehicle. In fact, Hummers are real cheap right now. 5 miles per gallon is a great trade off for safety. This may be an exaggeration, but you see my point. Kids make mistakes. It's your job to put aside wanting to make your son happy with the perfect car and get him a car that will compensate for his inexperience. he will thank you later.

I dont think my car is gay at all. As having quite a few high HP cars and the lineup you see here...the Mini is by far the most fun to drive and gets me into more trouble than the BMW does...

And I have been in the BMW community now for about a decade and there are only a handful that can touch this Mini....its about 700HP and runs high 9's in the 1/4. I havent seen an E46/E90/E92 to touch that yet...I dont think thats very gay. Edit: Not even the 900HP HPF E46's arent even in that time bracket.....

my wife drives our mini but I have no problem driving it. Its a fun car to drive. It feels like a go-kart and is very responsive. If he drives it he may like it.
