Not sure some of you are understanding the price here—-if you try to look for ANY used Civic Type R right now most of them are over $40k. So yes the pricing of a new one at $44k is absolutely perfect! They will mostly sell for over $50k I am sure.
People who want CTRs don't really cross shop them with that much—-they want this!

Yikes….the bigger problem here is the near unavoidable mark up you’ll have to pay to get this car. There are already people paying 60-70k for this car. I’d like to meet these people at their homes and see if they’ve been hoarding toilet paper.
You are in the presence of some very serious performance cars between 60-70k. Even between 50-60k. Yeah, I get the average Type-R buyer is probably that guy that has nearly every issue of Import Tuner and Super Street magazine so there’s a certain taste in cars involved, but I think there’s also a point where you cross over the threshold of sensibility. I’d rather purchase a GRC. And if I really needed my Honda fix, I’d just find an immaculate RSX-S and give it the Type-R treatment - it would be a better car anyways. |

The price of everything is high these days. The MSRP is fine for the new Type R. It's a niche vehicle with a niche purchasing base. People will have no problem with paying MSRP without cross-shopping objectively better vehicles for the same price, and many will pony up ADM as well.

Back when it was a new show - nearing season 1, we had TONS of friends who loved "24". They would rave and go on and on about how awesome it was.
... we tried. It was the dumbest, most irrepressibly melodramatic piece of screen-tripe we'd ever seen (that has since been usurped). In reality, we had no invested interest in the story or the characters. We couldn't stay "in" long enough to develop it. We just saw crap directing (thus crap acting), crap writing, and brilliant budget management. The Civic Type-R at this price point is a lot like "24". I have no vested interest in it's story, and front wheel drive hot-hatch-ish cars are not the kind of characters that I like. With that said, $40k+ starting price for a front wheel drive compact that has a spartan interior AND takes almost 5 & 1/2 seconds to get to 60mph? (and we're a group of folks who will generally pay more for a vehicle than is necessary) ... but.... hahahahaa... nope. |

Anyone buying a Type-R isn't looking to drag race it...so they aren't the ones who will care. There's a lot more that goes into making a car "fun" than just how fast it is. Look at the Toyoburu twins and their owners (Camry's can beat them in a straight line, but it doesn't diminish how capable and fun they are).

As you pointed out, there is much more to a car than straight-line acceleration. How it handles the curvy bits is paramount. I have yet to meet a BMW enthusiast who feels differently, but... ... at the exit to a curvy bit.... there's that pesky 0-60 or 60-130 again. I am also quite certain that, the way they've designed that chassis on the Type-R, it is infinitely easier to get the back-end out on that FRONT wheel drive car than it is on my X3 m40i. - that's fun, but I have no use for it on a front wheel drive car. That's just me. I'd rather a full rally spec. if I'm going that route. It's a value equation. Passion for the car itself (as with the Bronco) determines the value for the buyer. I have no passion for the vehicle - so as to re-state my initial post that... acknowledges what you keep "re-acknowledging"- as if none of the rest of us are acknowledging it with you. huh. I guess I take my initial statement back. - still, glad that Honda has brought this to market. I just think it's about $4-5k above where it should be... before dumb, dumb ADM. But the higher mileage ones that are cheaper are still solid assuming it was kept up on basic maintenance. I drove the piss off mine for over 100k miles and it never missed a beat despite how negligent I was with mine. That K20 is solid. |

Civic Si hits the sweet spot if you're in the market for this kind of thing. No way is the Type R worth 20k more.
