...when you fall down in public, and people rush to help you and not laugh at you!

I had a meeting on the second floor of our town hall last night, and the elevator was out of order. I slowly climbed the stairs. When I got to the second-to-last stair on the climb, my legs started feeling funny. (Not unusual for oxygen depravation from weak ticker and blood flow.) After a 30 second pause, I successfully climbed those last two steps...and promptly dropped to the floor as both of my knees buckled out from under me! The crowd that gathered to see the spectacle helped me get back on my feet after a short rest break, and I'm none the worse for wear if you don't count a lump on one of my knees and a bruised ego as I realize that I'm now old.....

In our town? The helicopter would fall through what's left of the town hall roof! The roof probably isn't in much better shape than the elevator, the whole building having last been renovated during the Nixon administration.

Heck, the building is almost old enough to tell us to get off of *its* lawn!!!!!

I started on a IBM 360 model 40. We had trays of cards to run jobs, the console wasn't even touched.

We'd mount tapes, disk packs, and then run a deck of cards and away it went.

This one hurts. Last fall, I had a hankering for potato pancakes, mostly because I'm not allowed to have them. I went to my web search engine du jour, to see if any restaurant in the area had them on the menu. One chain restaurant known for their breakfasts *did* have them, but only on the 55+ seniors menu. Darn my luck!

Here's why it hurts. Four months later, it just occurred to me today that I am over 55, and could ethically have ordered them from the 55+ senior menu! D'oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the benefit of other young old farts reading this, among the restaurant chains in our area with special 55+ menus are Dennys, IHOP, and Perkins. A quick web search will yield a surprising list of other casual and fast food restaurants that, while they don't have special 55+ menus, give 10% or more discounts to the 55+ crowd.

You know you're old when...you are actually thinking about going to Arby's right now just to see if you can score the 10% discount they offer for 55+ seniors. You're REALLY old if you're actually mapping a route to the west coast just because Jack-in-the-Box offers 20% discounts for 55+ seniors.

Get off my lawn, kid...and take that two feet of snow with you.....

I once had a young lady at a restaurant ask if I wanted their senior discount. I was mid-50s at the time. I asked how old you had to be. She said 65. D'oh!!

Invented and widely used are two different things.
Ask any other old fart in here which they owned first.
And speaking of 55, anyone remember when THAT was retirement age?

Still is the minimum for some. I know folks who started out in the university retirement system as grad students in their early 20's and then retired with 30 years service at 55. They were pulling in really nice pensions and were able to go back to their old jobs part-time to earn even more.
