Step 2: Is not an i8. Its the logical progression of the i8 but is not an i8.

A, "spiritual successor to the original M car, the M1", labeled a "supercar", and including an electric motor, had better go after the likes of the Porsche 918.

I have officially become bored with everything BMW a. Time to move on maybe. I like the new AMG a lot and there is still the 911. I have been on the i8 list for a year now. If they want the brand to settle, build and deliver the goddamn cars already. For that money I can buy a lot of cars right now that are fun and cool.....

I don't really understand this.
BMW built their reputation on making mundane 4-door sedans fun to drive. If BMW's series (and M car derivatives) were the best cars in their respective classes (as they were for so long), then do they need really need a halo car? What does a 918 competitor accomplish? Why not plow the money this would cost into figuring out how to make a parallel (to UKL) small-sedan RWD platform viable? In the long run, that'll carry the brand much further than a low-volume hybrid meant to compete in a class that doesn't present much of an ROI for BMW (or its customers). #hurryupwiththem2 |

We keep hearing this stuff for years. I don't see a standalone supercar happening. Only a beefed up version of the i8, the Toyota collaboration result or something similar. I am sure BMW CAN deliver a world class, true supercar but for a variety of reasons haven't and most likely won't build one. Sadly for us enthusiasts.

Also, I believe there was an interview wherein it was said the UKL platform was modular enough that a RWD configuration was possible. |

This is great news! I'd LOVE an M8... or a BMW Supercar of some kind. I wish they'd make it target cars higher than an R8 or AMG... Lambo or Mclaren would be nice.

Probably not. Less is more seems to be the lower output, lower displacement, lower weight (kinda, but still fat pig compared to yesteryear) and massively huge body.
Unless BMW M gets to make the car they want, it won't be exciting and just another hum drum "what it could have been if.." car.

I'd say it should be a tiny monster that will go up against the likes of an Exige V6 Cup R (around a track) but still be street legal and good with emissions. If that means becoming a hybrid, so be it. It seems the trend among the fastest of the fast is to use hybrid systems. Of course, I'd rather see it not be a hybrid and I'd like it to be NA.
Exige Cup R Power: ~360 HP @ 7200rpm Torque: ~300 ft.lb. @ 5000rpm Engine: Mid Mounted Supercharged V6 Transmission: 6 speed (manual/sequential) UNLADEN weight: 2292 lbs. (all this info from the lotus website) Last edited by PopsnBurbles; 11-21-2014 at 03:23 PM.. |

If BMW is going to make a 'halo' car, I am sure based on recent trends it will:
1. Be hopelessly overpriced for what you get. (performance will not match the price) 2. Will be a softer version than the R8 and 911, and not as hardcore as some on this board would want. 3. Completely undermine the M6 and make it more redundant and unnecessary. When BMW can 'return to its roots' and build a fun, small, decently powered sedan again without a stratospheric price, then I will get excited. |
