Ok guys,

Help me pick out a new DSLR. My current DSLR is a T3i.

I can pick up a deal on these cameras:


Canon EOS Rebel T5i w/18-55 3.5-5.6 II lens + 75-300 4-5.6 III lens for $499

or...

Canon EOS Rebel SL1 w/18-55 STM + 75-300 4-5.6 EF for $599

I'd pick the one with the faster frames-per-second. I no first hand experience with either, but they have good sensors.

Neither is that much of an upgrade from a T3i. You'd be better served keeping the T3i and investing that cash in a decent lens. What are you using now with your T3i?

I'll also mention that the SL1 is a tiny camera. Some folks find it hard to hold or don't like the balance with a larger lens. Have you held one in your hands yet?

That's what I was thinking too. All three cameras are 18Mpixels - so my only thought was maybe the sensor is better in these newer cameras. ? Yea... I don't really like how small the SL1 body is. I prefer my T3i body.

I am using the standard "kit" lens: 18-55 3.5-5.6 II lens. I want to buy a 70-300 or 100-300 lens... bu then I saw these kits and for not much more I'd have a new camera too. What to do ?

That 75-300 lens is not well regarded. You'd be better off with the new 55-250 STM version. Or maybe the latest version of the Tamron 70-300.

There is also this refurbed 60D with the 18-135 lens, which isn't bad. Same price range. Still essentially the same sensor, though.

The SL1 has the advantage in that it is pretty small (only if small size is important to you). But for that money, neither is a huge improvement over a T3i. I agree on all sentiments of getting better glass.

That's actually a good lens if you're going to be shooting in light places.

I have a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 and it works really well for shooting cars in tight spaces. But that range might be a bit narrow for you. You seem to be looking at lenses that can do a little bit of everything.

Might be a bit over $400, but for a T3i for tight places, I adored my EF-S 10-22mm ultra wide angle on my old Rebel XTi. It's sharp as hell and field of view is very impressive.

This is out of your price range, but you could really get rid of all your current glass covered by this range and just go with this, especially because you're on a crop body. This lens is spectacular value for the money too.

I have this lens and when it nails focus, it's sharp as a tack. But I've been disappointed in the low light focusing performance. I haven't had time to test it to see if the problem is with the lens or the body, but the last time I used this lens and shot a few pics in semi-low light, not one was in focus despite having focus confirmation.

But when it nails focus...

I am still up in the air about a lens. I did see a Canon 70D with a Canon 18-135 lens. That lens looks good. I wouldn't mind some more reach though.

Well, both is quite capable and honestly, it all depends on what your purpose of the camera is mainly used for. The T6s is newer but does not offer significant upgrades. Most usable features on the T6s you can find on the 70D. Also, the 70D does everything a tiny bit better (view finder, battery life, video & video AF, tiny bit larger sensor [although basically, they are the same and you quite possibly CANNOT tell the difference] etc.). The increased Megapixel of the T6s will not be too big of a difference either unless you do a lot of cropping afterwards. Personally, I will pick the 70D.

However, there is one big factor to consider - weight. If you are primarily going to be taking this everywhere and travelling, the 70D bulkier weight can take a toll. the T6s is a much lighter choice.

Side tracking a little bit, if you are going for something compact and offers awesome results, read up about the Sony A6000. Coupled with the Sony 18-105mm F/4 G OSS lens, it is a really attractive combo for not too expensive of a price point (although above your budget probably for what you're considering right now).

I have shot with Canon for many years, and I find myself picking up the Sony Mirrorless more often now. Also the plethora of new technologies on Sony cameras dwarfs what Canon and Nikon has to offer =/ Check it out!

Don't have experience with Tamron lenses.

The first question you might want to ask yourself is whether or not you need the reach. Most of the lens that offer super telephoto zoom will sacrifice sharpness and overall quality to achieve the desired reach. For the Canon, the new 55-250 STM lens seems to be particularly well received and gets very high quality images across the focal length while keeping price low'ish. Google and read about that!

For an even better lens, the Canon 70-200mm F/4L (non-IS) can be had for around $400-500 used easily if you REALLY needed the long distance focal reach. (keep in mind the 1.6x crop factor of the lens, you'll essentially have a 112-320mm lens).

For an all purpose lens as a beginner, I will suggest the Canon 24-105mm F/4L (kit lens for the full frame canon cameras). The focal len of this lens should cover most shots that you'll want. For wide landscape and ultrawide, sorry, this will not do. Again, a used one can be had for around $500 which is quite a bargain for a L lens.

^^ To go with what was stated above, I got my 70d around the time the T6* was announced. I looked at "do I wait and did I make a bad choice"

1) I needed a camera then and there, so in the end moot issue since I couldn't wait
2) no real upgrades to make the wait worth it. Not sure if the T6 series is weather resistance, but for what I plan on shooting, and the type of shooting, I liked the faster shutter speed, using the larger camera batteries (the E6 battery that all my friends have/swap/share/borrow/etc)

And ditto to the lens (24-105L) recommendation. That has been my most used and all-around lens. Check canonpricewatch.com and their street-price program. I got my new, from an authorized dealer/warranty/receipt, etc, for 610 shipped. Granted, I'm just getting back into photography, but I haven't regretted any of the setup I have currently.

Don't beat yourself up. The sensors are very close to the same and the lens is exactly the same. You can take stunning pix with either.
