Pontiac coined "The Ultimate Driving Machine" not BMW

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I just found out that prior to being the head man at GM, Bob Lutz used to work for BMW in the early 70's. He brought "The Ultimate Driving Machine" with him from Pontiac, who did not trade mark the phrase. I find this fascinating!

Too bad Pontiac never consistently made an ultimate anything. The G8 and GTO were just starting to make Pontiac good and GM killed the brand.

For all you (including some guy from FL) whom think the old 60s-70s GTOs and Firebird/TransAms drive well. Try driving them again. They don't stop, turn, or even go that fast in a straight line stock. Last year I had the rare opportunity to test a survivor 1970 GTO 400. It was great when it didn't move. On the road it was just horrible.

Edit: apparently the above comment offended some assface. I do not retract my anecdote but revised the intro.

Thanks for the "Appreciates", fellas.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. One "rare" test drive? C'mon, spend some seat time before you spout off. Also, if you expect a 1970 GTO to handle like an M3, see the first sentence.

^ In this song "G-6" is actually a twin jet private aircraft Gulfstream VI or GVI, obviously not Pontiac G6...

Hehe, duck fat knows. He's just my boy trying to make light.

But G6 car was pretty Turrible. Even with the 3400 in it. Had it for a summer when the E420 was in the shop.

Yeah there was an article a while back a good read. It described how he helped BMW stay afloat and did not let BMW get rid of the kidney grill design and did not let them change the roundel design.
Proved to be invaluable decisions!

Bob Lutz is "the Man" though. Really helped inject performance into GM upon his return.

GTOs were great cars in their day and have a place in auto / muscle car history. They can't compare to the power, handling and technology of cars 40-50 years later, just like it was hard to compare a mid-late 60s GTO to a car from the 1920s or 1930s.

Believe it or not. I TOTALLY agree with you. And in fairness, I only checked out the 1970 GTO because it was at a speciality used car dealer that carried exotics and collectibles.

For me, it was years of hearing about how great these cars ARE from what people say...even to this day.

For me, even though I only took the car around some local yet rural streets, I was very disappointed. It's like someone else posted...never drive your childhood hero...or was that Top Gear...

I have a list of old cars I'd love to have, but fear resto-mod or pro-touring might be the only way to go.

Mr. Lutz was born in Switzerland. Too bad he does not start a car company there. He could do the whole "Built like a Swiss watch" thing.

I've always thought that was the dumbest fucking motto. I vastly prefer "Freude am Fahren", it's just too German.

On a slightly related note, "Vorsprung durch Technik" kicks the shit out of any other car motto.

Go look up what real GTOs sell for on the auction market. Outside of the Original 328 not many BMW's appreciate as much as GM/American muscle cars.
