SC train derailment damages 97 BMWs

Train was traveling from Greer to Charleston

Dec 5, 2016

JENKINSVILLE, S.C. —

A train carrying close to 100 BMW vehicles from the Greer plant derailed in Fairfield County on Sunday, according to officials.

In a release Monday from Norfolk Southern, officials said the wreck happened just before 3 p.m. Sunday near the Newberry/Fairfield county line at the town of Blair.

The train was on its way to Charleston when it derailed near Highway 213 and Alston Road, according to officials.

The area is adjacent to the Broad River and also near the town of Peak.

Two locomotives, 10 of 96 train cars and 97 BMW cars were damaged, officials said.

Officials said there were no injuries and the derailment did not cause any traffic issues.

Barkley Ramsey with the Lebanon Fire Department said the incident happened because of a malfunction.

He said there was no hazardous material found so there is no harm to the community.

Crews were on scene early Monday morning. WYFF News 4's Aubrey Jackson said she could see people in hard hats at the scene.

Norfolk Southern officials aid crews were able to re-rail both of the locomotives and four of the rail cars. They said crews will work through the day to move the damaged cars away from the tracks and make track repairs so service on the line can resume.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation, officials said.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office said traffic delays are expected as crews move in heavy equipment.

The sheriff's office said a road closure is expected at some part of the operation.

Deputies said drivers should consider and alternate route and add extra time to the commute.

At least it wasn't 200,000 gallons of highly flammable toxic waste.
It's happened before (but probably not anywhere near Blair.)

And yes, this is one reason why we need to pay $900+ for "Destination Charge."
Some for the actual transportation fee, some for insurance, etc.

My LBB is (was...nobody knows) on the Hamburg Highway. I guess this incident puts that in perspective for me. Could be worse. Maybe BMW should look for new transporters...

I flew one of the 737's that its fuselage fell off of a train into a ravine on its way to the Boeing factory. It flies a bit crooked

Many years ago a transport ship from Munich to Port Jersey was advised not to continue through the N. Atlantic, but did anyway. The carnage was pretty amazing. Some of the cars had to be cut apart to get them free of the beams in the ship. I think Port Jersey fixed about 60 cars. Sent the really bad fixables around to the port in California(around 40 I believe), and had a bunch that were unrepairable. The Capt of the ship was fired.
