Straight Pipe 22 RS5 review

It's a handsomely proportioned sports sedan. Since VAG has supposedly stopped working on ICE motors, is this going to be the last fully ICE RS5 or will there be a RS5 Performance with 500 hp, like a last hurrah? it's interesting where they positioned the car, priced like a M3 but performance slides between the 340 & a full blown M car.
I've driven the S5, thought it was great, just not special enough and priced a bit high.

Their review is spot on especially since they've reviewed both the LCI and pre-refresh. I was a little sad that the suspension travel issue was corrected between my 2019 and my 2022 but looks like it's not the case. Not a big deal though, especially when if you are coming into an RS/AMG/M car knowing it's going to be stiff. The next gen RS5 is expected to get the Panamera's E-Hybrid engine and electric powerplant. That would still be competitive enough (~550 hp) with the M3 and C63s until everything goes full electric.

I honestly contemplated Sonoma Green for my 2022 order, but with the already insane delays, an individual color would have been something like an extra 8 months on top...no way I was waiting for that.

Holy hell. What color did you end up with? And throw some pics in.

I really wanted Sonoma Green (which is a normal color now for 2022), but at the time I placed the order it wasn't available - only through Audi Individual color selection...but because of all the stupid delays, my order got switched over to a 2022 anyways but my color was locked in to my 2021 order. Hopefully that makes sense lol. Anyways I went with Nardo Gray, which is the same as my 2019 RS5. I take delivery at the end of this month (order placed in April )

That's ridiculous. Nardo is a cool color and is totally an Audi thing, but I would have a hard time choosing the same color. Can your dealer get the same car in the green from another dealer? Like a trade?

There's no inventory anywhere, especially with the options I went with (Nardo paint, basically every option, black wheels, and blue carbon ceramic brakes). Also I really love Nardo Grey and didn't own my 2019 for long enough to really appreciate the color so I'm still really okay with the selection. I just want to be driving it and not waiting!

This is what my build looks like from the Audi build app...

Thanks! I was back and forth between the RS5 and the G80 M3 Comp xDrive...I know the M3 bests the RS5 in almost every metric but the grills! Broken record I know, but it's just so hard to look past them. When spending as much as a well equipped M3 or RS5, you need to be able to love the way it looks. The RS5 does it for me in spades, although I know I'm compromising on some performance (it's still no slouch by any means so I'm not complaining).

I agree with you wholeheartedly. You want to love the car you're paying nearly 6 figures for. That includes the way it looks and the way it drives. In your daily, I don't think its going to matter if the car does 0-60 in 3.5 or 3.4. Enjoy it in good health.

My problem with that engine is how it goes after about 5000rpm - it just dies and feel really flat after that to the redline. Almost to the point where the redline should be at 6000rpm as there just isn't any point in taking it above there.

At least it doesn't have enough torque to make it torque steer unlike the complete shitshow of handling that is the RS6/7 in every generation.

The engine combined with the torque converter gearbox just made it feel more like an S to me, not an RS. Note that the C7 S6 has the V8 making 550nm and the dual clutch gearbox - that was a hell of a good car and better in just about every way than the RS6. I've driven a few and they are superb. If the current RS4/5 had that gearbox, 550nm (I'm guessing that gearbox might be limited to 550nm and maybe a bit more power (as every competitor has ~500hp now) it'd be a much better RS product instead of just being an S product.

I had my eyes set on the RS5 after selling my M3. Literally a couple days before pulling the trigger on one I test drove a S5 and realized I much preferred the softer ride quality it offered. It didn't really feel any less sporty in day to day driving, but felt way more compliant and relaxing to drive. Plus it saved me like $18k.

Nice ride! I had an S5 Sportback before the RS5 and definitely agree that it's a much easier daily driver. Softer suspension (but still firm enough to be sporty), and good road manner all around. I liked the edge of the RS5 though, and it was hard to go back to an S after having an RS, which is why I bought another one. I have a Q7 for the pillow-soft required journeys.

I really like what Audi has done with these, they are gorgeous, not goofy or obtuse, just refined and good.

Engine is still completely in front of the strut towers.

Audi is putting out some nice looking stuff though. Pulling off the monster grille since what 2004?

Interiors are typically a step higher than other brands as well.

I find it funny they can't make these new cars quicker. My 2016 Audi A8L with just an APR tune is faster off the line, 3.59sec. Sounds pretty incredible though. Love the color. I know with my car the AWD system just makes it not even feel possible that it can launch so hard with zero wheel spin.

How fast do you need any car to be? I consistently get 3.4-3.5 sec 0-60 in the RS5. Plenty fast enough and mine isn't tuned or anything.

They need to be as fast as EVs in their price class. The market is changing and the need to adapt, I know in the coming short future they are going to EV anyway. Do they purposely under tune them so when they release EVs they seem somehow better? I'm just tired of hearing how fast EVs are when ICE can be just as good...minus the emissions.
