The Downfall Of BMW Has Begun...
i just read about bmw abandoning their high rev n/a engines and i just have to say . i know it's all about efficency atm and all but truthfully i think bmw is just getting lazy. the bmw ///m was all about motorsport and philosophy of a high reving n/a engine.
why abandon their heritage? just to make the car more fuel efficent, make it compete in HP wars, etc? ///m was all about engineering to me. take a look at the e46 m3 csl. a small coupe with a i-6 3.2L 340 sum hp beating the ferraris, etc on the ring for its time. that car was and still is a timeless classic. the motor alone is a work of art being able to hold all the s/c and turbo boost on stock internals , and reliable, damn right. whats even more sad is bmw going to make m versions of the x6, etc. to me this isn't even a smart marketing scheme. they should be more concentrating on the csl of the m3 and even the m6 and m5s to compete with other cars such as the black series from benz. bmw says the demand just isn't there but how would they know if they never released the car to the states, just by statistical figures, etc? they put the csl in the states and it will sell by itself. the csl already estabilished a name/legend based on the e46 m3. i could go on more but . all in all if i were in charge of bmw marketing, i would abandon the ///m x6, etc and start working on the csl models to compete with other dedicted cars (hence black series), throw some competition, csl commercials, and dominate the game . complete utter bs. and this thing about dailmer and bmw sharing things together . i read that they are currently working on terms for benz to use bmw engine and transmissions... i know the economoy is down but still....jeebus i need a break off this shiet

I thought the downfall began when the decided to make a "motorsport" 3-series 200 lbs heavier than the vanilla version.
And if you want to talk about "engineering" there are numerous quotes from BMW saying that they are achieving higher power with better fuel economy and emissions. Frankly if they wanted to maximize the NA engine they should have made the car a lot lighter to begin with, and cut out the customers who only buy the badge. They should have made it like the CSL such that there would no need to produce an actual CSL model. The hightened stiffness would drive posers out for sure. |

Cutting out the posers would kill more than half of their sales. Alot of people buy Ms just to say they have one and its the badest thing on the planet. Then they are some that buy it because it has a high price tag and think they got into an exclusive M club or something. Only maybe half the buyers buy the M knowing what it can do and willing to use it.

Making any M model in this economy would be a retarded idea but BMW is still going to do it.
I'll be happy if BMW makes any "M" cars is this economy. Any M car is better than no M car. They could just stop making them totally and make 3 series that look and sell like toyota camrys. |

the csl already made a name for itself and alot of car enthusiasts know it. i came to realize the USA is big and in it are alot of millionairs.
yes there is the whole fuel economy issue, etc but bmw is really clearly losing site of their heritage which is the sadest part . im really big in bmw and motorsport so to see this is a major bummer. PS: for the csl, you can get radio, heat, etc all options though and if you bought a csl obviously you know what it's for so why care what your friend thinks

i'd bet money on the chances of us eventually seeing a production model of the CS and maybe the eventual reality of a CSL.

as for the engines, they gotta do what they've gotta do to keep up with the competition. sales dictate all the moves nowadays. they could stick to the "pure, traditional" N/A method, but that would lead to crappy MPG figures (something Americans view with great importance) and less impressive performance numbers. we will all feel the difference, but BMW can't solely cater to the small market of performance enthusiasts any longer.

BMW is one of the most solid nameplates in the auto industry. Obviously they are and have been making the right decisions. So they came to a point where the economy is where its at now, and they have to sacrifice something and that's the pure N/A engines in ///M cars but you do get FI. So there is ease to tune and upgrade the car. So I mean yes they are straying away but there is a lot of hype associated with turbo cars. Even moms think o turbo=fast. That's a great niche in the market BMW is not in from a business standpoint(yet). Not my enthusiastic standpoint. But like I have already said when I see it I will be somewhat sad because I know an era is over and a book is closed.

In addition to that, who wants a stripped out M3 track car? For that price, I could get an Elise which is pretty sweeeeeet as a track car! |

FI>NA
I for one am glad that FI is finally taking over. NA to me is like carburetor's, bias-ply tires, and hand crank starters....an idea whose time has passed. |
