Anyone else form an emotional bond to their Roomba?
Just had my brand new 560 delivered earlier today... I gotta say, that lil' bastard did a damn fine job of cleaning. So far it seems to do a great job - the "lighthouses" work great and it returns to home base without having to smack it. And it asks so little...
Gotta love the little buddy...

ok, had it for 24 hours - ran it twice...
You should see the dirt bin. I didn't realize how much crap I had in the corners and underneath stuff. Definately a great investment. I'll probably have to manually vacuum my pad maybe once or twice a year to get the tough spots. BTW ^ you were asking - it transfers seemlessly from hardwood-to-carpet and back, the brushes etc. detect what type of surface its working on, so if it goes from room to room it switches automatically. Its doing my kitchen right now - not one swear word out of it yet!

My wife has been harassing me for about a year and a half to get one of these. Does it really work that well? How much noise does it make?

There's so many different roomba's....how do I pick the right one for my appartment?
I have laminate floor in the kitchen and a plush carpet for the living room and a textured carpet in the bedroom.

OP: what's the maximum height / clearance before it decides it won't go any further in the current direction? There's this "hump", a thin layer of wood, separating my dining room and kitchen, it would be great if the bot can go over the strip and continue cleaning the other room.

Can someone explain to me the pattern in which it goes around the room?

Roomba is made by a company called irobot. They also design missile guidance systems for the military and build bomb retrieval/disposal robots for military and police forces.
The way the roomba works is that the first time you run it it goes around bumping into the walls, furniture etc, and creates a layout of what the room looks like. After it has gone around a couple of times, it computes the most efficient way to cover every part of the room at least twice before returning to its home base to recharge. When its battery gets low, it seeks out an infrared signal sent out continuously from the home base and homes in toward it. A small receiver in the front of the roomba aligns with the IR sender in the base, and it returns home to recharge. It also has a remote control, and can be programmed to come on automatically at any time, daily. (I have mine set to 2 pm, while I'm away) My roomba is named Optimus. |

Mine is like a pet to me. One time I set mine to clean the room on the MAX setting. I closed the door, came back 15 minutes later and I see the Roomba flying across the carpet and it ran under the bed quite fast. It bumped around under my bed and I had to wait for it to come out. When it came out, I had to catch it and the canister end of it was missing. So basically it was running around without it's back end vacuuming and catching nothing. But it kinda reminded me of being a parent with a kid running around house without their pants on.
