Eat s*t and die!

OK, so, not really a thread on what you think !

So we have a dog and these things must just come from an alternative universe
We seem to be constanly google "can my dog eat <food item here>

That is our favorite past time, I thought that you throw dog's scraps and they eat them?

Apparently Chocolate is deadly poisonous but the can eat there own shit or anyone elses. God seeing my dog drop a turd then turning around and rubbing it's nose in it and about to gobble it down like it's gourmet dog food

Then the bugger wil wanna come and snuggle you and give you doggy kisses with excretement particles all over its face

Dog is my OH's and my daughters

I mean the thing sits there wags it's tail and gives you puppy dog eyes, whats not to love

been living with this thing for a couple of months now

BUT the BEST part is when I walk through the door, he comes running up, rolls over, lays down jumps up, sometimes pee's himself, OH has never done anything more than just give me a glance

Dog's !

The creatures are supposed to have this awesome sense of smell, but will chow down on sh1t, rotting roadkill.......... I don't understand! Maybe it's like when we smell a really ripe stilton or something - smells rotten, but tastes great?

Btw, I'm told (by a vet) that chocolate isn't deadly once off, but it's cumulative. I've seen a spaniel eat a whole chocolate bar anyhow, and she's still going 8 years later...

We got our new puppy first few weeks of Sept 2022. He was 12 weeks old then. Over the course of that month he could not wait to smell and lick his own poop and sometimes eats it. Freakin gross. Seems like he has out grew doing that but still smells his own shit after pooping sometimes..I don't get it.

Now, he has the worst separation anxiety and it drives me nuts. You cant leave the room or the house without him whining and crying nonstop. My wife got some anxiety meds for him to take and we started on that a few weeks ago. Haven't seen any improvement.

Sorry, didn't mean to thread jack.

My buddies stupid beagle Zeus ate a whole loaf of bread about the same size as him. They took him to the vet and the vet said "let him pass is naturally and don't feed it anything until your sure he passed it". Dumb dog was wimpering for like 2 days and finally passed a huge turd, then proceeded to try and eat it again. Ill never understand what goes on behind a dogs mind but that dog was always happy with not a care in the world. Must be nice to be that dumb!

One thing that worked for family dogs that would freak out when they left is leave a sweatshirt and/or pants that have been worn for a while in the cage (or on the couch if free roaming) so the dog has something with your scent to calm it down. Worked after a few days, they came home to the dog sleeping on top of the clothing.

Thanks for the tip Honda. We have been trying that as well. We put it in his cage so when we actually put him his cage at night we want it to help but you can hear him freaking out, screaming bloody murder and wanting to break his cage to get out. We set a plastic bag next to his cage one time and it had a very expensive Christmas garland in it and he destroyed the bag and the garland. The guy is only 11lbs and is a mini dachshund.

Honestly..you can hear him from inside the laundry room (where his cage is located and his food / water bowl) which is on the other side of the garage wall all the way down our drive way which is a 30-35yrd long drive way.

Not sure what to do to be honest. The doc also prescribed a stronger "dose" for when we expect to have a party or holiday or whatever and he needs to chill out.

Once he is in bed with us, does not say a peep and sleeps the whole time.

It just isn't fair. If I were to eat my own poop, go around humping things, I would be locked up.

With the chocolate thing I think dogs can have an ounce of chocolate per pound they weigh before it becomes lethal. Don't test that but it takes a significant amount. Raisins are something dog owners should worry about more.

Your faith in the involutary committment process is heartwarming, but no you wouldn't. Probably nobody would let you kiss them though.

Have you thought about getting CBD treats? Everyone I know who has tried them has sworn by them. My buddies girlfriend has 2 australian shepherds and they will not shut the hell up. Once she gives them a treat each they calm right down and just kinda mosey around. She orders them off spamazon.

iirc, this measurement applies to pure chocolate/cacao. So if they eat more but it’s like milk chocolate or something pretty diluted, it’s still bad and will make them sick but it’s not a direct 1:1 in that case

I mean....you 'could' unleash your inner GG Allin (if you really wanted to).

For the most part, natural, healthy food is good for them. Dogs can actually eat a surprising amount of fruit and vegetables. Keep away from processed and junk food.

That is a good idea. Are you able to provide a link to what she uses?

Thanks!

**Eat anything story*
My wife was a veterinary technician and this dog came in for what was found to be an obstruction in his intestines after some testing. Surgery was the only option and the husband and wife were in the waiting room while the dog was recovering. My wife comes out and says "fluffy" is doing fine would you like to come in and sit with him. They do and after a few moments the wife says so do you know what it was that they found?
The doctor told her we actually found a pair or panties that your dog had eaten. Oh really the wife says? The doctor said do you want them back? To which the wife replied not really but I don't remember losing any so sure....

"Those aren't mine, I don't wear thongs"....the husband looked at the dog and that's how the fight started. True story

Luckily I have managed to avoid any shit eaters so far. Although I do have one that if something has died on the ground he is unable to stop himself from rolling all over that patch and get that delicious scent of death all over him.

Not too many rotting carcasses in the yard so it's not a huge deal, but happened a couple of times while we were traveling in the RV and staying at various parks.

If your dog is eating it’s crap it is missing too much nutrients in its food. I had issues with my Golden retriever doing similar along with quite a few other issues (cancer). The vet gave him about 6 months to live when he was 5years old and told us to make him comfortable. So we jumped to the extreme and found the BARF diet (bones and raw food). After switching him over his health improved drastically. One of the new nice things was that he was now disgusted by the smell of his and other dogs turds (and cat turds as well). I can happily say he lived for another 6years.
Vets only get a couple of days on nutrition in school and usually it is sponsored by Iams or science diet. What diets do you think they will recommend? Not usually anything not processed…

so Muscle meat on the bone, a bit confusing

again, going on what we have been told as kids

dogs eat marrow bones, or no they are not good because they can break there teeth
chicken bones are bad because the splinter, but I'm seeing words to the contrary
meat should be cooked, no, meat should be raw.

so very confused,

I wanna give doggo a raw bone with some meat on it, HOW
He's a maltese and a BIG BIG chewer
This guy chews on ANYTHING hard, plastic, metal his carry case, if he can wrap his teeth around it he's happy!

I have seen around trotters on the forums, but not sure where I can buy them from.
what about chicke drumsticks? chicken wings
lamb bones ?

txs again, wanna him healthy BUT safe

We have small dogs also and do not feed our dogs anything but their dog food and some dog treats. We try to never give them house food so they never start begging for food when we are eating. Never had an issue doing that.

A lot of these small dogs have all kinds of issues. Our boston mix is choking on air half the time. Don't need to deal with him choking on bones and stuff.

david in germany brings up a good point about potential nutrient deficiency. Another reason dogs eat their poop is to cover their tracks (i.e. hiding or removing evidence of their poop) but I think that tends to be more the case w/ puppies/dogs that aren't house broken yet.

I wouldn't feed your dog based on stereotype food/treats from growing up. Bones are bad because some can break or fracture teeth as you say but smaller bones can also splinter and cut them (internally as well as externally). This goes for any hard 'treat' (e.g. antlers, some Himalayan chews, etc...). There's no guarantee it will happen but it's up to you if you want to roll that dice.

If you've not had a dog before, there are many books and websites about how to care for and feed them. As with people diets, there are many philosophies and fads on canine diets (e.g. dry food, wet food, raw, home cooked, grain free, etc...) so do your research and decide what you think is best for your dog.

Unlike their wolf ancestors (well....maybe not for Chihauhaus....) and excluding Huskies, dogs developed facial muscles over time that allowed them to make the infamous puppy eyes. Dogs are also smart.....they learn how to manipulate you to bend you to their fuzzy wills. Stay strong. lol
