New Bed advice

The wife & I are in the market for what I call 'a grown-ups bed', aka King size.

I've done some research, but the choices are overwhelming!

do you guys have any suggestions? what have you bought that you loved, or hated?

Thanks.

Don't bother price shopping. My wife and I just went through this ordeal last fall. It seems that all the bed manufactures and the retail sellers are in bed with each other to avoid price cross shopping.

What they do is make a bed and it may be identical to a bed at Macy's as the bed at Matress Warehouse but they each have a different model #. Thus not being able to fully compare and then price match. It's horseshit

Just find a bed you like at a price you don't mind spending.

IMHO I'd avoid pillowtops. We got one. It was great the first few months but now it's starting to show indentations in the pillowtop from how you sleep with major uneven wear. It's rather annoying. And since you can't flip the bed, only rotate it the wear issue will never go away.

A good king will typically run from $800 and up. Ours was around $1k at Matress Warehouse. They are very willing to bargain, ours was originally $1,200 and they threw in anti-microbal dust pillow cases and bed case which was like another $100 value.

I figure we would be better off with a separate pillowtop that can be replaced.

I like how you called it an 'ordeal'. this really is a pain in the ass.

A friend spent some loot on one of those foam deals. He said it was the best money he ever spent.

I have a Tempurpedic, it's awesome. It's weird until you get used to it though. Had a plasticy the first couple weeks too.

Had it 5+ years now, I will replace it with another when it comes time no question.

+10000.... spend 5 minutes in one...couldn't be happier...the only downside is that you miss it SOOOOO much when you travel

If you think of going the tempurpedic route, you might want to consider going with latex instead. It has the same benefits as termpupedic, but none of the drawbacks (smell, heat, losing shape) as it does not react as much to body temperature. Additionally, most tempupedic beds have a 10 year warranty, whereas latex ones often have a 20 year warranty. Often times latex mattresses are marketed as "green" matresses. Furthermore, people with allergies tend to do better with latex matresses, unless they have an allergy to latex of course. On the downside, latex mattresses are more expensive.

I would test drive several matresses if possible, but whatever you chose, make sure you try it out first.

you must have gotten a crappy one because I've had a pillow top for a good 4 years and its still like new. IMO you have to go test out beds i went to 3 different stores trying countless beds out until i fell in love with my bed.

never buy a mattress when it is not on sale. When they are on sale, they are usually 50% off. There is a huge mark up on mattresses. Do shop around because prices varies.

Went from a Simmons Beautyrest to a Temur Pedic. It's scary how much better the TP is.

20 year warranty btw.

I have a Ligne Roset Lumeo bed with a Bultex mattress. It's similar to a Tempurpedic mattress and it's very comfy. We had the bed for a little over 4 years now, no issues at all.

Tempur-Pedic x 1 billion - (FWIW, I've got the "Celebrity" version)

The first two weeks you'll be so pissed because you spent a bunch of money on a stinky hard mattress. Guaranteed, day 1/hour 1/minute 1 of the third week, you'll have no idea how you ever lived without it.

Got the one with the adjustable foundation, too - never really use the massage feature, but love being able to put my feet up a bit. Wife insisted we buy one, now she's gone but the bed stays mine . . . . FTMFW!!!
