For what you're describing, I'd say a Macbook would be sufficient. I guess the next most important feature would be portability, and that's really up to you to determine.

Why blow $1200+ so you can type term papers and listen to music? That's like buying a Ferrari so you can go to the grocery store. I would save yourself a bundle and go with a standard Windows based laptop like a Dell or Gateway at less than half the cost.
I personally tried going back to Macs (started out on them when I was a kid in the early 90's) by getting a Mac mini and I absolutely regret every bit of that purchase. It has just as many problems as any Windows machine I have owned. I know the Apple fanboys will flame me on this, but don't believe the hype with Apple products. If you are a graphic designer then by all means go for it, but for anything else I wouldn't bother unless you can get a huge discount as mentioned above. Just my two cents. |

i'm looking to buy myself a desktop to do the basics...email, download music, track finances, search for porn... as much as i would like the fastest, most powerful computer, i prob won't need anything more than a $500 dell to do what i need to do on it. |

^I have no reason to BS. Irregardless, he works for corporate. Ask any Apple employee, when they initially start they receive 50% off their FIRST purchase. Apple also gives them opportunity to invest in Apple's stocks AND they give them double shares. Any purchase after their first purchase I believe is 20% off. Again, ask any Apple employee.

I have two 15" MBPs and we just bought a 21.5" iMac. We bought the lowest possible iMac that you can buy and it still stomps every other desktop out there. 3.06 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM (upgradeable to 8 GB) and it has a 500 GB hard drive. Screen resolution is simply amazing, full 1080p. The LED display is awesome. I watch bluray movies on it all the time. You simply can't go wrong in buying an iMac if you're looking for a desktop.

back to OP...get a Macbook not necessarily the pro you won't regret it. People that say Mac is shit is because they don't know how to use it. Updates takes seconds to load, logging takes seconds compared to minutes on PC, workflow is much better, ilife 09 is the shits
