pistol magazine loaders

I have a quick question. I presently have a Sig Sauer P226 chambered for a .40S&W round, but I plan on adding additional weapons later, none smaller than 9mm. The Sig came with three double stack magazines. The magazines are easy enough to load until you get to the eighth or ninth cartridge or so, then it requires considerable thumb strength to load them, largely because they're new, and the springs don't have much give yet. I personally don't have a problem loading the magazine to capacity, but I plan on taking a couple lady friends to the firing range, and I'd rather not spend all my time loading magazines and winding up with sore thumbs until the springs in the magazines have some give. So, to that end, I'm looking at purchasing a magazine loader to speed up the process. So far this device seems to be the best I've come across:

http://maglula.tripod.com/uplula_uplula.htm

http://www.amazon.com/Butler-Creek-U...owViewpoints=1

Looking at the amazon.com reviews, out of the 62 people that have reviewed it, 59 gave it a five star rating, the remaining three rated the device four stars out of a possible five.

So my question to you is, is there a device better suited toward accomplishing my goal?

Thanks in advance for any insight you might offer.

i use the uplula as well. Works as advertised. Very easy to use, and saves my thumbs, especially with my double stack magazines.

Radix,

My experience with these devices is that they don't work as well as advertised and that while they do work they are fiddly and slow. Whenever I take new shooters out, or people with reduced hand strength, I load for them. It's quicker and more personable. Or, I have them load until they can't, and let them shoot with reduced mag capacity. I've never had anyone complain about shooting 11 instead of 15 rounds, and I teach a lot of people as part of my job. All that being said, I have not used the device above and I'd be curious about what you think if you do get it.

The UPLULA works extremely well for pistol mags, I wouldn't be without one. Loading my Glock mags or my STI2011 mags is a real bitch (sharp feed lips, strong springs) and the UPLULA slaps them down like a bitch. On my 1911 mags, I don't need it, but on double stack mags, it works extremely well.

I also use the LULA loader for my AR mags. LULA loaders work very well, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one and use it.

immiketoo, you might want to check it out, since it really does work as advertised.

Thanks Scott, I always just thought they were over-hyped or for guys like my dad with bad arthritis. Now that I think of it tho, I have struggled with Glock mags. I use PMAGS for my AR, and they're easy, but I will check it out.

I had the same skepticism you did. However, after reading the online reviews of the device, I came two one of two conclusions:

1. The manufacturer is running one of the best astroturfing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing) campaigns I've ever seen.

or

2. The device works really well, and nobody has anything bad to say about it.

That said, I just got mine in the mail, and the thing works beautifully. Great device, five stars.

If you are taking new shooters to the range, you shouldn't be topping o any mags. Just stick to a consistent low round number, like 5. Count shots (you surely do this by practiced habit anyways) and it adds an element of safety.

I've bought some sidearms over the years that have came with "LOADERS", but they are all junk.

Holy old thread. I'm sure he does by now... Although I agree with Scared about not giving full mags to new shooters.

I never try a loader before but I heard it's good. Why shoot with a 40 not a 9mm? I have Sig 220 .45

Hey, if the mag loaders work for you, go for it.

I'm a pretty huge fan of .40s&w. Have a 4" XD40 and a G23c in that cal.

Do you guys shoot often? (i'm new here)

Bit off topic, but I have a P226R .40S&W (awesome gun; good call Radix) - does anyone know if there is a legal / non LEO way to get a double stack (15 rd) mag shipped to CA?

BTW - this loader looks awesome. I think I need to pick one up for a couple different weapons...

There is no way other than illegal/LEO options to obtain and possess that mag in your state. Except join the military. Sorry man, your state sucks for guns. IF you go private party, you run the risk of getting caught and you would risk your right to own any firearm. Not worth it IMO. Does anyone know differently?

That's good to know. I will remember that for future stocking stuffer use. At work, we have always used the "suck it up sally" mentality I shoot primarily 1911's so I don't have that problem, but others use a variety of double stack guns.

Yes, there is one way - but, it'll be tough in Cali. Vote out the politicians that see fit to preempt Federal law!

That is a very cool gun. I want one. Their loader is a bit more simplistic but you are right, it does work...

The springs were pretty stiff initially in the mags that came with my new Sig P229 (.40 S&W).

I had to use some thumb strength to get the 12th round in there but after loading each up maybe 4-5 times I can now load 'em up no problem as fast as I load my Glock mags.

A tip: When you get a new mag, fill it up and keep it loaded for a while. I've found that helps to break in the mag springs.
