Pulling the plug
I was watching weeds season 4 yesterday and thought of this:
say a member of your family is diagnosed that the only way he can live is on machines. The rest of his life will be spent in a bed, almost a vegetable but alive on machines. Would you pull the plug? also a little off topic, but is it considered illegal to pull the plug? you are basically killing someone!

So they wouldn't be conscious of what is going on around them?
If so, then I would probably wait as long as possible before pulling the plug, just hoping for a "miracle". Heard about this guy who woke up randomly after 10 years from a coma. |

My grandma had a massive stroke in 1994 and it left her paralyzed one side and she could not speak. She was not on machines and could feed herself, but that was all she could do by herself. She died in 2007. It's one of the worst things to have to see. Even worse the emotional toll it took on my mom. It's a very delicate situation and not only do you have to live with your decision to pull the plug, you have to live with the ridicule some of your family members may give you for the rest of your life. |

She could mumble, it sounded like "memememe". I sort of think she said that b/c I called her my Meme. You could figure out usually what she wanted, especially after all the years you learn. We had her cared for in her home until around 2003 before we moved her into a nursing home. One interesting thing is that it was easier for her to understand Polish than english. Pretty amazing since polish was her second language, but I think she grew up speaking it more regularly around the family. |

Of course I would. I would put in my will that if I am considered a vegetable by at least 2 doctors, I grant my family permission to pull the plug.
Sure they're alive, but they're not really "alive" |

This is why it's important to have a living will or some kind of document that indicates what your wishes are, so your family knows what to do. In my experience it seems like most people when faced with the possibility of existing on a respirator or life support choose to sign DNRs.

Depends who it was. If you're the one making the decision, I think you would know what they would want you to do. Like my dad, I know he'd say pull the damn plug. I'd say pull the plug on me if I'm a veg for sure.
