nothing to do with BMW, but look what's missing...

the catcon on my 4Runner just got jacked, in broad daylight. pipes were cut and they walked off with the cat.

I'd hate to see the list price of a cat from any dealer. Thats the only reason I can imagine someone stealing them. That rally does suck OP, sorry!

Exact same thing happened to my sis-in-law in the San Gabriel valley area. Apparently, the platinum, palladium, and rhodium in the cats are worth some money, and the ones on Toyota SUVs are easy to access.

Hope your insurance takes care of you.

Yep, it's for the minerals, not the pipes per se.

indeed.

its been happening for quite some years now, just never thought I'd be a victim.

also, the theives can sell to the junkyards for $100-200 and then WE have to buy back our own stolen cats from the yards. it really pisses me off.

Tweekers steel them for the rare metals. Toyotas are one of the easiest targets. -Runners and Tacomas get hit hard. Don't even bother going to the dealer. Pick up a high flow aftermarket (Magna-Flow) and save a ton of $ and make a little more power too.

Platinum is worth something. Rhodium is used in making jewelry more shiny. I'm not sure of the uses for palladium.

This mostly happens to trucks, or any vehicle that is raised off the ground, so be mindful.

I wish they would pass a law that would curtail the value of selling a cat-con. Maybe make it completely illegal unless you're a certified seller.

The same thing happened to my father-in-law's 4 runner in North Hollywood about a year ago. They cut the whole thing out.

A co-worker had the same thing happen - came out of his girlifriend's place, got into his car and discovered his cat had been sawed off. He was amazed someone could do this in broad daylight unquestioned, but if you see someone doing this wouldn't you assume the person was working on their own car?

This is pretty big business at the BART stations in the Oakland area. It seems like japanese suvs are the main target (from talking to a mechanic friend) the same Isuzu Somethingorother got hit twice. the worst part is that they cut the pipes before the couplers so the exhaust manifolds have to be replaced etc (not always, but in this case). The bill was over a couple grand to repair it.
