What is it with annoying fan boys?
Ok guys,
Havent posted here for a while, but been very busy over the past month or so with work and other things, however I need to vent some steam here and hope there are a few of you who will get my point of view on the subject. Is it just me, or are fan boys total life sucking parasitic losers who bring nothing but misery and bad taste to our well loved interest in all things automotive. It seems like no matter what event you go to or forum you are a member of, there is always so jerkoff who tries so hard to get everyone to see that their opinion is the best and everyone else who thinks otherwise is a complete moron. I'm sure we have all come across someone like this and usually I just brush them off, however there have been a small group of Lexus owners that are making more noise then most and have become intolerable to even be around let alone try and have an intelligent conversation with. Why is it that they have to try so hard to make us (European) or god forbid (American) car owners feel like garbage for not buying a Lexus. I get it, Lexus builds good cars that are reliable and well put together. Thats great, no one is arguing with them on that. But here is the kicker, While I am a loyal BMW and Porsche fan, I can at least admit that these cars are not perfect and can take negative feedback while quite a few (NOT ALL) Lexus owners would rather jump off a bridge then admit that anything can be wrong with a Lexus product. I have two close friends who have a Lexus product. One a 08 IS350 and the other a 09 LS600H. Both have been back to the dealer for warranty work far more often then either of my BMW's have. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones but at least I can joke about that. Try and get either one of those guys to say anything bad about their car and they avoid you like the plague as if you said something horrible about their wife or child. I just don't get it. So the whole event that sparked this rant was the other night a group of us were out to dinner and the conversation turned to cars when one of our friends asked my GF and I if we had chosen a replacement SUV for our current Jeep. Before one of us could even answer, one of the aformentioned Lexus owners pipes up and says "They will probably get some god awful Mercedes or BMW and then bitch about the horrible mistake they made while spending everyday at the dealer. You know...cause they can't admit that an RX is the superior choice." I was like really? How tactless and low class do you have to be to try and tear someone down in front of a group of people in such a formal setting. Not only did it create a huge moment of awkwardness at the table which I overcome by saying we havent decided yet and changing the subject, but it just solidified my ever growing hatred for all who own and worship the Japanese brand. I feel better having gotten that off my chest and no, this was no intended to flame Lexus and all who own them, I have just found that owners of that brand of car seem to be the most arrogant when it comes to a car type enviroment. I am sure you all have your own brands that you find owners of kind of irritating. Thanks for the rant guys. |

What bugs me is when people make harsh comments about other cars they haven't even driven, let alone own.

No offense, TL;DR, but I'm gonna chime in. There are two things annoy me about fanboys.
The first would be people that relate stereotypical pros/cons of brands with reputations built back in the 90s and early 2000s, like the assumption that Hondas and Toyotas are noticeably more reliable than Fords (or that BMWs are noticeably sportier than their competitors). The second thing that kills me is a person that's quick to recognize the advantages of a particular company they obviously hold in high favor, and then make those advantages apparent to others, but that same person is slow to admit (or does so in a very technical and seemingly none-praiseworthy manner) whatever advantages or acheivments another brand might have accomplished.

Funny... This is a case of classic insecurity on the part of your Lexus buddies.. Lexus cars are not exactly bullet proof. It can become an electrical nightmare as it ages. Don't get me started with suspension components and the cutting and pasting (coil over suspension, bushings, etc).. required to make Lexus cars drive as competent as a BMW.

This explains a lot of it. Specifically Bandwagon Effect, Post-purchase rationalization, Selective Perception, Confabulation, and a whole lot of other ones apply. There's also the social aspects of trying to find a tribe to belong to, since we are pack animals that don't live in packs anymore.
We all have biases, we can chose to accept this fact and try our best to account for them (and fail, but at least try), or carry on as normal. |

Sorry, but my moms GX 470 has 120k in miles and has has very minor problems, my car didn't work at 12k miles...
I would say if u want a fun car don't buy a Lexus but thats not true anymore.. Lexus makes great vehicles but every brand has its positives and its negatives... If I was going to buy an A to B car and look professional it would be a Lexus nothing else.. But I can't wait till I have the $$$ for an M3... The M3 is so much FUN I can put up with any BS.. (Kinda like my 135i)

I remember back in few years ago when I still owned a lexus, some people used to say if you know about cars and love driving you should never buy any Lexus. I moved onto the M because I have always wanted one not because I did not like my Lexus anymore. The ES might be boring as hell but it had been the most comfortable and reliable car I ever owned. For 2 years and 60000kms, I had ZERO issue. Not even a burned light bulb. Yet, many people were still saying I made a big mistake buying that car. When the unexpected acceleration problem occurred, more people laughed at me even when mine was having nothing wrong. Most of the talk came from people driving FWD audi, b-class, and some 320i with auto tranny but nothing else. Man I start to miss my Lexus as I am typing now.

Are you certain you aren't overly sensitive? In all fairness they may be just taking a cheap shot at you in a friendly manner.
Personally speaking my Lexus has been more reliable than my BMW and thus far I am satisfy with the product. I will be going back to a more athletic car in the future and to that aspect is what Lexus lacks. My priorities are different. I need a reliable, hassle free transportation more so than performance.

Feeling is something of a personal choice and what one is used to. Just because most journalist are used to heavy steering doesn't mean that's preferable choice of everyone. Modern BMWs have less of that connected feel as old mechanical BMW. If feeling is what you prefer than why not a an Elise or Porsche, we all make comprises based on individual needs.

it's just human nature to worship, and for car enthusiasts we tend to worship what we drive...
my favorite comment from a mercedes enthusiast...."hey you bought another bmw? I swear bmw's are like a rich mans honda, they're everywhere" I really wanted to correct him by saying no that's acura but I didn't need to take that further... just live with it and know that your blessed to be able to choose whichever car you please

Let's call a spade a spade here. Sure german cars drive in a different manners but they don't exactly break down or fall appart but they have too many sensors or things that will go wrong over time. For basic transportation I'll go with the japanese, korean, american car over germans and english.
