23yr old Foxconn Worker Dies in the Bath After Working 60 Hours a Week
Having been in china and seeing how workers are treated there first hand, there is no absolutely reason for this to happen in any country.

i worked 60 hour weeks from last August to April.
paychecks made my dick super hard, but it can get pretty brutal leaving the house at 6:15 and getting home @ 7:30. we "cut back" so i've only been working 54 hour weeks :/ |

I wonder what the conditions on the line are. It said he worked on the assembly line but I'm wondering if it was dealing with electronic components or not. Some would require climate control, some items wouldn't.
Under normal environmental conditions, a 60-hour work week will not be responsible for someone's death unless there is an underlying condition. Sounds like Foxconn was violating the labor law though. That sucks. |

I was going to say the same thing and quote my 90 hours for 2 years...but then i realized I should probably STFU because I guarantee his 60 hours a week on the assembly line is infinitely more difficult than really any 80 hour work in the usa...haha

Dear Foxconn I had a 23 year old son who used to bring me $600 a month home but now he has died and he died because he overworked at your factory. Can you replace my son for me? Can you replace the monthly income he used to provide for our family?

The other sad part is that for a lot of Chinese people out there they will work day and night to get what they want and live for which is money. Having lived in Taiwan for 20 years I know the difference between the Chinese and many in the west to where the Chinese live to work and many in the west work to live. They pretty much literally live for money and live to work for that money most of their lives and when they are not working hey are gambling for it whether it be playing Mah-Jahn,cards,casino,stock market or pretty much betting on anything that one can place a bet on.
Sad how the kid died |

Chen’s parents were deeply sad about their son’s death, and they have made the following requests to Foxconn: (machine translation, read original Chinese here)
- Provide a copy of the deceased’s employment contract, attendance cards, pay slips, pre employment physical forms. - Provide reimbursement for victim’s parents’ medical (Chen’s parents fainted when they heard about the death of their son) and travel expenses. - Cover the cost of living/eating for relatives. (calculating the lowest expenses, $5 yuan for breakfast, $10 yuan for lunch/dinner) - Bear the funeral expenses of Chen’s death. - Provide compensation for victims’ parents and grandparents. And here’s what Foxconn answered: - The copy of the deceased’s employment contract, attendance cards, pay slips, pre employment physical forms could only be given to the police/government. - Since a precedent is not established for reimbursement on medical fees and travel expenses, reimbursement could not be provided. -Only the cost of living/eating could be covered for the victim’s parents. Two standard rooms and $40 yuan will be provided daily for each person. -May consider to bear the funeral expenses of the victim. -The compensation for victim’s parents and grandparents will be provided from the victim’s social security tax (about 10,000 yuan). Chen’s parents were not satisfied with Foxconn’s answers, and Chen’s mum was always trying to negotiate with Foxconn to get a better compensation. Chen’s mum cried a lot, and always faint when she tried to beg the representatives of Foxconn. Looking at the pathetic situation of Chen’s family, Foxconn finally offered a better compensation, 4 standard rooms and a daily compensation of 300 yuan for 17 members of Chen’s family (including relatives).

I was working more then 12 hours a day, everyday for almost a year.
Its sad to hear about this but in reality it was his choice, its to bad we don't have american's willing to work themselves to death to support themselves rather then just mooch off of the government |

Sounds like they're trying to blame Foxconn for his death. Not like he died at the plant. He went out the night before, came home, woke up and died. Hmm

I think they "low ball" his hours. 60-hour-working-week is considered a "normal" work-week in China. He probably had week-after-week of continuous overtime.
I was working in Bantian, Shenzhen (in the same area as Foxconn) for another company last year and they do make people work like "dogs". The only reason I could "avoid" the 60-hour-week was because I was considered an "expat". Quote:

don't even try to compare the working condition and life style between the China and the US.
I have worked in many countries before (Japan, England, Singapore, Taiwan, US, and Canada) and there are no place like the working conditions in China. Quote:

I worked 60 + hour weeks from January through mid May this year. I think one week I was pushing 75 hours. And to sweeten the deal I didn't even get overtime, so I got the same pay as if I worked 40 hours.

This is a really sad story.
IMHO, it's only a matter of time before China goes through the same labor issues that the United States did at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. |

Unfortunatley we will never see an autopsy report which would show the true cause.
The conditions in the factory were the most likley the biggest culprit, If working 60,70,80 hours a week caused his death the human race would have been extinct a long time ago. |
