gt3 is n/a, rwd. it's what you've seen in GT competition for over a decade
gt3 r/s is the limited version of the GT3. stripped of its what few luxury features it once had, giving distinctive badging, two paint schemes and an intense diet. This is the race ready porsche of all race ready porsches 911 turbo is what's commonly referred to as the "luxury 911." Alot of the options of the 911 and 911S come standard on the Turbo. It comes with AWD and the turbo motor thats always the fastest 911 when it debuts. Automotive enthusiasts always debate between rather the GT3 or the Turbo is the Porsche to have, and usually the GT3 comes out on top for pure driving pleasure. (enthusiasts have gone as far as to say that the carrera S beats the turbo in driving excitement as most refer to the S as one of the best cars on the market today. Not a knock on the Turbo, it's just a porker and a different animal all together.) 911 GT2 is THE 911 of all 911s. Its GT3 meets Turbo. You get the Turbo motor (which always seems to get beefed up for GT2 applications). You get RWD (which saves a WHOLE lot of weight compared to the Turbo). And you get the design features of both (for instance, the front fascia where the hood meets the bumper is a la GT3, and the LEDs are a la Turbo). They're always the most expensive and rightfully so. The joke about the last generation GT2 is that it's so extremely difficult to drive that MT couldn't recommend it, as they, themselves could barely keep it under control. I didn't know this until a while ago, but the 993 GT2 was the fastest 911 available until the 997T was produced.

If you get a GT2, get some high-end driving lessons or good life insurance.

I grew up in a Porsche house (which in turn forced me to become a ferrari boy). I think if I were going ot buy one, it'd be an S or a Turbo. The GT3 and the GT2 seem like porsches for people who already have porsches and/or use their porsches for porsche worthy purposes. Buying a GT3 to take on my sunday drives just seems like sacriledge, and buying a GT3 to beat on at the track just seems like.. well, who am I kidding, I cant afford that!

The Turbo, GT3 RS and GT2 use the wider body of the C4's. The GT3 shares the same body with the C2.
As for some history, the Turbo used to be RWD as well up until the 964 Turbo S. Porsche wanted to make the Turbo more mainstream, so they gave the 993Turbo AWD and traction control, and later auto tranny (996 Turbo). For those who wanted a successor of the 964 Turbo S, Porsche created the 993 GT2. |

where does the C4 or C4S fit in? is it 911 + awd = C4, and 911S + awd = C4S?
so.... GT2 > GT3 R/S > GT3/911Turbo > 911 Turbo/GT3 > C4S/911 S > C4/911 ? something like that? i drove a Cayman S when I was in germany last yr (company paid for my rental ). after driving that, i told myself my next car will be a porsche. how does the 911 compare to the Cayman S?

wow thank you sooo much for the distinctions man. very very helpful and useful. ur the best
the gt3 rs got no air conditioning and radio and is it plastic windows all around minus the front or just the back. also comes with a roll cage. so overall the gt2 is the best. i thought the gt2 was n/a. |

From my short time in the cayman S and comparing it to a 997S, I'll say that the cayman provides the more visceral driving experience. I should note that as a tall guy, I was a whole lot less comfortable in the cayman, and that probably made the drive more exciting. It's alot more nimble and "darty" if that's a word. The 911S didn't feel as direct, but in a way, it was more fun. The extra power and weight over the back made its rear easy to swing around, and the motor was always sooo smooth. I'd say the better drivers car is the Cayman, the better track car is the Cayman, but the car i'd rather have to admire, sit in, and drive recklessly with would definitely be the 911. It really is an everyday sports car. P.S. thanks a lot for making me conjure up feelings of lust about the car that isn't mine. ... yet and good call maq, I completely forgot about the widebodies. Your average person won't notice them unless they're side by side, but they're definitely differentiable if you know your stuff.

GT2 > GT3 RS > GT3 > 911 Turbo > 911 S > 911 > anything with 4 in the name Put the Cayman in there somewhere above or below the two 911s depending on if you prefer handling or power.

For me, only a more extreme (GT2 or GT3) will make sense for the 911 platform...that's why I will be selling my 996 S towards the end of the year...or at least when the buzz on the GT3 subsides. Either way, my Cayman S is a keeper.

RUF, Techart, Gemballa.
You could always throw those in there too, just for fun.. IMO, after all the "GT" models, I'd go with a Cayman S, swap in the Turbo motor, plus all the necessary extras. That would be lots of fun. |

But yeah, Protomotive and Evolution MS make some bad ass Porsche's, and GMG is right up there too for domestic Porsche tuners. If you like twin turbo Viper's check out Heffner, 2000+whp..
