BMW iPhone 5 Adapter in the Works. Expected Next June
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW iPhone 5 Adapter in the Works. Expected Next June UPDATE 10/15: We've just posted an FAQ/overview of iPhone 5 and iOS6 functionality in BMW models as it currently stands. See FAQ HERE. Apple recently released its iPhone 5 and with it came a change to its connector from the previous 30-pin to the new 8-pin 'Lightning' connector. This change unfortunately means that the new iPhone will no longer work with BMW's current iPhone snap-in-adapters. So when can we expect the the new adapters for the iPhone 5 from BMW? We've learned that BMW has already started work on the snap-in-adapters for the newest iPhone. The changes however, are said to be quite complex (due to the new connector) and development will therefore require some months to complete. The changes are not as easy as one may think. For example, the iPhone/iPod Out function requires the video Digital/Analog converter circuitry to be integrated into the actual snap-in adapter, which will naturally take some time to develop, test, and release. The estimated delivery time frame is approximately 7 months and it's anticipated to be ready in June 2013. |

Wow so this company is so innovated that it takes it 7 months to come up with an iPhone adaptor that will most likely be made in china for a few bucks by a third party.
I have a suggestion why not use the same company that is already making the plugin adaptor for the new iPhone?

If I don't have a snap in adapter now, can I add one?

What's so special about the snap in? The y cable or just USB cable is more than enough

And my 2011 models are not USB/digital enabled, so they still require aux input (the Y-cable) rendering my iphone 5 worthless in the car.

no reason it should take them almost 9 months for what has already been accomplished with the lightning adapter and aftermarket parts:

The reason is this cable is really complicated. Apple didnt give to other companies the right and technical datas concerning this cable. It s a dynamic connector where each contact has a different role each time it s connected.
This long wait is not the fact of BMW but more of Apple. That s also why you cant found any device (Sound docks) from other brand than Apple yet. The made in China cables only provide power but not data. |

Wow! That's a long wait.
I was going to rewire my USB port for video out since my iPhone 5 won't fit in the snap in, but it appears that the 5 doesn't support analogue video out - meaning it can't be used in this way like the 4 can. Hopefully when BMW releases this it's a solid product, because the snap in for iphone four went though four different revisions and was always problematic. |

Wow, so even if they meet their release target (and don't end up recalling it right away like the last one) it'll be available just a few months ahead of for the iPhone 5S, or whatever. Hopefully Apple keeps the same form factor like they have in the past.
Quote:
I really don't see that happening. BMW hasn't produced a car that requires a Y-cable for 2 years now, so I suspect people with iPhone 5s and older cars are out in the cold. However, you should be able to make it work in at least one of these two ways: 1. Buying a Lightning to Dock adapter and connecting your Y cable to that. 2. Using the standard white Lightning to USB cable and also a normal headphone cable to connect from the iPhone's headphone jack to your AUX In. However, the other option above would likely result in better sound since it would be delivering line-level audio rather than amped audio like the headphone jack does.

Probably -- but remember that Apple has kept the same form factor for 2 years over the last 4 phones: the 3G/3GS and 4/4S. So if that tradition continues, the iPhone 5 cradle SHOULD work in the 5S (or whatever).
