Okay, just throwing this out there....

Why in the Year of Our Lord, 2013, can't we have a much more compact form factor for 12V power ports. I mean hardly anyone smokes any more, so why can't the Auto Industry convert over to a much more compact standard 12 V power port other than a stupid cigar lighter socket - Just sayin'

Maybe, but there are 6 types of USB connectors and the max power is 500mA at 5 V.

All standard USB have one similar plug otherwise it's not USB. Also why would you need more power? Trying to charge Tesla or use your hairdryer...?

Well that's just the Standard Type A USB plug. There are 5 other types. USB is a data protocol standard, not a single plug-type standard. The other plug types are: Standard B, Mini A, Micro A, Mini B, Micro B. Just to be a geek about it.

Yep that's true, but usually like 95% of USB cables end with the Standard Type-A USB plug. For example if you have a USB port in the desktop, laptop, TV, car, radio, etc. normally you will see Standard Type-A USB receiving port.

We're drifting here. Back to the point, which is a different (i.e smaller/less obtrusive) form factor for 12V DC power other than a cigarette lighter, which size is defined by the size of a 1940's cigar. The industry should develop a new standard for a 12 volt power conector. USB has a max voltage of 5V and 500mA, which is hardley enough power to run something like a tire inflation kit, which many people here keep in the trunk in place of run-flats.
