2015 Ferrari California replacement to get a turbocharged Maserati based engine

The next gen California (MY 2015) will have the Maserati/Ferrari 3,8l turbo engine that has been in production for a few years now.

http://www.gtspirit.com/2013/12/19/n...bos-at-geneva/

So, Ferrari will be using a existing turbo engine, probably with their own specific set up for the California. Will be interesting to see if they retain the cross plane crank from the Maserati version or use a flat plane crank...

The Maserati engine is made by Ferrari allready and is a common Ferrari/Maserati engine architecture (used also in the 458):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari/Maserati_engine

From a Top Gear interview with Ferrari CEO Amadeo Felisa:

Quote:
I'd asked him about turbos in general. "Turbocharging and direct gasoline injection is the right way for performance without a payment in consumption. To get the same performance with naturally aspirated engines at the same consumption is difficult." OK, I ask, so turbo would be good for the next California?

"Today's California doesn't lack performance…" But then he adds. "To evolve performance as we have the past four or five years, turbo is a solution." Won't that mean losing the engine sound that's so critical to being a Ferrari, and the sharp throttle response? He shakes his head. "Wait and see."

I ask if this means using an additional electric motor. "LaFerrari was done to research hybrids. But it's not affordable on our normal cars. You don't need an electric motor to offset turbo lag. You can do it in another way."

So onward goes the relentless march of the turbo engine. Still, even for Ferrari, some things are sacred. "We will keep the V12 naturally aspirated," Felisa says.

John Deere went to a Briggs and Stratton motor and they preserved the flat plane crank I believe

That probably means that the successor to the 458 will be a turbo. That's unfortunate.

Just jokes cuz I can't comprehend your knowledge of the engine dynamics. And I can't afford a Ferrari California. I'm a medical guy. But I was just teasing you. Sorry

Perfect timing. I've been looking for a fun weekend vert. How much is the upcharge for getting it in individual YMB? Are the tail lights LED? I'll debadge it, because Ferrari is putting the prancing horse all over everything. And a 4MT, because these 6 & 7MT's are for pussies.

The California is a chick's Ferrari. I remember when it came out one the Ferrari execs said one of goals in designing it was to make it easier to drive. They had hoped over 50% buyers would be women.

Agreed. They look very girly. But they are a lot smoother and more comfortable compared to their other cars. Just not as fun

It isn't a chick car. But i see your point of being a softer Ferrari. IMHO, they should have never built it even though it's the last Ferrari to offer a MT (No one knows about this!). Despite of what everyone thinks about Ferrari drivers, most i know are true enthusiasts... However California drivers seem to buy Californias just because they wanted a SL with a horse logo.

That's the reason to build it right there. If it means they return a healthy profit, then go for it. Doesn't mean we have to buy it (obviously you didn't cause you bought a 458 instead )

They are very popular with women drivers here in south Orange County. I think it's the seasons "must have" for women realtors and empty nesters. They are literally a dime a dozen. I can't recall ever seeing a man drive one.
