Land Development Test

1960's Arithmetic Test:

"A logger cuts and sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is four-fifths of that amount. What is his profit?"

1970's New Math Test:

"A logger exchanges a set (L) of lumber for a set (M) of money. The cardinality of set M is 100. The Set C of production costs contains 20 fewer points. What is the cardinality of Set P (profits)?"

1980's Dumbed Down Version:

"A logger cuts and sells truckload of lumber for $100. His cost is $80, his profit is $20. Find and circle the number 20."

1990's Version:

"An unenlightened logger cuts down a beautiful stand of 100 trees in order to make a $20 profit. Write an essay exploring how you feel about this as a way to make money. Topic for discussion: How did the forest birds and squirrels feel?"

21st Century Version:

Having filed the appropriate environmental impact statements and donated a large amount of money to GreenPeace, and paid an arborist to bless the operation, the modern logger cuts 20 dollars worth of scraggly trees from the hundred dollar forest and chips them into flakes to be mixed with recycled milk jugs and plastic grocery bags and extruded into fake lumber. It is shipped to the far east and converted into park benches then shipped back to the United States and the benches are installed adjacent to the forest park so tourists from Europe can see what a forest used to look like before the early-day loggers clearcut them.

The only ones who get a living wage job out of all of this monkey motion are the aborist, who actually was a liberal arts major, and the park ranger, who not only is paid for watching tourists watch trees grow, he will work 25 years and retire at 110 percent of his working wage on a government pension, which will include health insurance for his entire family.

2000's version:

"Un maderero corta y vende un camión de madera de construcción para $100. Su coste de producción es 4/5s de esa cantidad. ¿Cuál es su beneficio?"
