i dunno about vacation pictures...if the idea is to submit new material or create a challenge for a contest, how's that gonna work? it's not like everyone is gonna go on vacation in two weeks.

I think limiting to recent shots is just one idea. Vacation pix is a good challenge and almost all of us will have some in our archive. I'm processing the stuff from yesterday's vacation right now, but I might rather use something older.
I'm not really interested in some sort of "class assignment" type contest, at least on an ongoing basis. I think that if, in general, we limit to pix not entered in one of our prior contest, then that's alright. If someone want a contest that includes only recent pix, then they can do that, but lots not make it an ongoing requirement. Dave

While I agree in some respect to that, I think the initial intent of these was to make a level playing field for everyone and have people go out in shoot. If you open it up to archival (which is basically what it's become now) then the people who've been shooting for 30 years have a distinct advantage in every contest as their catalog is much broader than one of someone who's only had a camera for 6 months and has tons of talent but not much time to shoot.
